Andrew Scott has said the success of Sherlock is down to the show's writers.

The 37-year-old actor - who plays deceitful professor Moriarty in the BBC One crime drama - believes Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat have managed to make the show into a massive success because of their love of Sherlock Holmes.

He said: "The guys who write it, Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat, are huge Sherlock enthusiasts, so I think the reason it's become so successful is because there's nothing cynical about it, they love it. They know all the versions."

However, the actor admits he didn't realise how successful the programme would be when he initially signed up to it and he now has fans, whom he calls his 'Scotties', sending him touching letters and stunning artwork.

He explained: "I always knew it was going to be a success to some degree but you couldn't foresee how big it was going to be."

He added to Ireland's 'The Late Late Show': "You get the occasional odd person but it's a whole other world and you get some really beautiful drawings and some very moving letters."
