Note: This article contains spoilers that some viewers/fans of 'Family Guy' may wish to avoid.
'Family Guy' has been hyping up the death of one of their main characters for some time now, but when it actually came to that harrowing moment, nobody actually believed they'd go through with it.
Brian Griffin - the family pet and much-loved family dog will no longer be appearing in episodes of the hit comedy series, after being hit by a car.
Stewie Griffin looked on in despair as his best friend lost his life, and failed to get his time machine to work in order to go back and save him from his fate.
“This was an idea that got pitched in the writers room and it sort of caught fire, and we thought it could be a fun way to shake things up,” E! Online were told by executive producer Steve Callaghan.
”We started talking about what the next couple episodes could be and we got very excited about the way this change will affect the family dynamics and the characters.”
Through the years, Brian has battled through many tough situations including his major crush on owner Lois.
He's been beat to a pulp by Stewie, got far too involved in drugs (see clip below), yet managed to write a book in the chaos of it all.
However - all may not be lost. Observant fans have noted how future episodes of the show have 'Brian' in the title, and that Stewie's time-travelling to the future to find Christmas toys could indeed see him make a comeback to this episode and save his beloved friend.
As always, creators are keeping tight-lipped, but we're holding out hope.
RIP Brian. #familyguy
