The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge with Prince George

Britain's Prince George has been offered a role on 'Coronation Street'.

The royal baby - who was born on July 22 - is being lined up for a brief appearance on the family-favourite soap alongside his parents the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, with TV bosses citing the unveiling of the show's new set in Salford, Greater Manchester, as the perfect opportunity.

John Whiston, the show's creative director, told the Daily Star newspaper: "We want the royal baby to come and open the new street. It would be fantastic to get Kate, William and George there with a pair of tiny baby scissors.

"The soap has a long historical connection with the Royal Family so having the newest arrival on the set would be perfect."

The long-running ITV programme has so far failed to mention the momentous arrival of George - who is third in line to the throne - because of the uncertainty surrounding Duchess Catherine's due date, so are hoping to make up for it by planning a special scene involving the two-week-old baby.

John explained: "We didn't have time to put the birth in a storyline. We did with the Jubilee but we knew what date that would happen!"

George's grandfather Prince Charles famously made a brief appearance in 2000 to mark the show's 40th anniversary celebrations.

Footage of him meeting salon owner Audrey Roberts (Sue Nicholls) was incorporated in the episode, so a similar concept could be envisioned for baby George.
