Phanton pregnancies

Don't worry ladies when you are suffering with morning sickness, and back pain whilst pregnant your fella will know exactly how you are feeling.

A recent study showed that many expectant fathers suffer with phantom pregnancies. Men whose partners were expecting all reported that they suffered from morning sickness, cramps as well as swollen stomachs.

The study carried out by St George's University, London monitored 282 expectant fathers, aged between 19 and 55 then compared there emotional and physical well being to 281 men whose partners were not expecting a child.

The phenomenon, known as Couvade syndrome, is usually experienced in the early stages of the pregnancy with some men in the study experiencing food cravings, while others suffered back pain, and fatigue.

Four men on the study claimed they had lost weight, while others piled on the pounds one man even experienced fainting.

But some men experienced symptoms right up to delivery one man taking part in the study claimed that his experiences during labour were worse than his wife's.

"It seemed like my pain was worse, her contractions were fairly strong, but she couldn't push and as that was happening my stomach pain was building up and up and getting worse and worse."

Dr Arthur Brennan of the University of London's Faculty of Health and Social Care Sciences, and the study's auther said: "Some people may percieve this as men trying to get in on the act but far from being attention - seeking, these symptoms are involuntary.

"Often men haven't got a clue what is happening to them. Doctors don't recognise Couvade Syndrome. There's no medical diagnosis.

Yet this research proves that Couvade Syndrome really exists - the results speak for themselves."
