The Cinematics

As The Cinematics were spending the day in the office, we couldn’t pass up the opportunity have a good old chinwag about their new album, Love And Terror, life on the road and their love lives….

So guys, how has your day been at FemaleFirst, have you enjoyed it?

Scott: I have stars on my face! Which evidently means it’s been a fabulous day! It’s been really nice actually, we’ve been on tour around Europe, from sunny Italy, all the way through the South of France, so it’s been nice to come in, sit down with a real cup of tea and have a chat.

Okay, so the new albums sounds fantastic, what are each of your favourite songs?

Scott: Ooh, I like She Talks To The Trees

Adam: Hard For Young Lovers, it’s the only song I’ve had a part in writing and it actually made me cry!

Ross: To listen to it would be Hospital Bills, but to play live it would be She Talks To The Trees.

Larry: it would be Hospital Bills or Wish (When The Banks Collapse)

Your first single, Love And Terror, received critical acclaim, how did you write it and is there a general theme in the song?

Larry: Well, in the song itself was written as a kind of anti-pop single and we’d already written lots of pop singles on the record so I decided to write this one with a long guitar intro and we sent it to the record company and they decided to make it into the first single!

I think Love And Terror captures how we were feeling when we were writing the album because things were pretty difficult for us and it was a stressful time for maintaining a relationship and I was trying to purse being in a band and maintaining a relationship with my girlfriend and it was hard to deal with pressure from both sides.

Love And Terror is a bit like having someone being in love with you and having people having expectations of you and trying to live up to them whilst still doing something you’re really wanting to do.

Okay, so you’re going to take a break now before going back on tour, what are you going to do?

Scott: Sleep and probably do some more writing and chill out a bit

Larry: I’m going to renovate my flat

Scott: How are you going to renovate your flat?

(a long discussion on how to renovate the flat ensues

about colour schemes, heating etc….)

Ross: I’m going to get over this cold I have and then visit my parents.

Adam: Eat some good food, write some songs and go to some great parties!

So, Scott, you played an impromptu version of I Kissed A Girl earlier for us, do you have a girlfriend at the moment?

No, no, no! I’m available…

Woo! Okay, so what’s the best thing about being in The Cinematics?

Scott: Well, recently we had a day off in Rome and we got to see all the sights, so I suppose being in a band and being able to play great shows is fantastic, but being able to travel the world and see so many places is awesome, I’ve seen things that many people my age will have never seen.

I am so jealous! But are there any drawbacks?

Scott: I think whatever you do, there will always be things you love and things you hate, it think people who work in an office might think “I have to go to work every day at 9am and come home at 5pm, I never get to go anywhere or see anything, it’s really boring.” but at the same time, I actually kind of think that kind of a lifestyle would be great… coming home to my own bed and if I had a partner I would see theme very night and I could make my own dinner.

If you live an ‘ordinary’ life, you sometimes take these things for granted, when in actual fact they can make you feel really good, because when you’re in a band you can miss those small things. Hotel rooms are great, but you can start to feel a little bit lost in a world that’s constantly changing.

Aww, that’s so sweet. Now, talking of touring, what’s the best gig you’ve played on tour?

Scott: We’re split in half, Rotterdam and Hamburg… we did a really great show in Rotterdam at the start of the tour… it was in this place which was a resturant / bar during the day, and then some Transformer machine turned it into an awesome gig venue at night! The fans seemed to love it, and there was a club night afterwards so we got to hang out.

Awesome! Now, are there any bands you would recommend me to check out that I might not know?

Larry: On tour we listened to Wild Beasts quite  lot, they were really good.

Scott: They have two albums out so we kept them on the iPod quite a lot. At first their vocals might be a bit scary and you’re kind of like “What?” but once you get  to grips with the fact that the singer has one of the most insane voices you’ve ever heard, they’re an amazing band!

Also, there is a band from Germany called Beat, Beat, Beat they’re fans of our band, and we’re fans of their band. They’re not signed yet but check them out on MySpace, or if you’re ever in Germany and  see they have a show, go and check them out?

Cool, we will, so finally, any last words?

Scott: Erm, Buy . Our . Album?

And of course, thanks very much for having us, it’s been a fabulous day and we hope to see you all soon!
