Sergeant are a 4-piece indie rock band from Scotland, and you know I have a bit of a thing for Scottish boys… but despite the fact that they can call Oasis their celeb best mates, do they actually command the respect their name suggests?
Hello there, what are you up to?
Not alot, we’ve got a few days off, so I'm in my house catching up on some sleep.
You just set up your own label, Shy Recordings, tell us a bit about that..
Well we had some problems with our old label, and asked to be released at the end of last year. To keep creative control the obvious thing for us to do was start our own label. Fortunately someone was willing to give us a big bag of cash to allow us to do that!
You are also set to release Counting Down The Days, your first single on your own label, what made you choose to release that one first?
We chose 'Counting Down The Days' as the next single because all the people who have been fans of the band since we started seem to like it, so it was the obvious choice.
If you could recommend just one song of yours for us to listen to, what would it be?
'Away with The Fairies'.
I’m going through a bit of a Scottish Band Phase at the moment… I think it’s the accent… so, if I was contemplating coming to your show or sitting at home and watching Big Brother, how would you get me out of the house?
Well Big Brothers shit, and there is nothing better than seeing a band live.
What advice would you give to someone just starting out, knowing what you know now?
Be prepared to work hard, and when money becomes the most important thing its not worth doing it anymore.
To anyone who hasn’t heard of you yet, how would you describe your sound in just five words?
60's 90's melodic pop nonsense.
You know we’re having a bit of an economic crisis here at the moment, if people wanted to spend their last £10 on a cd this weekend, why should they buy yours?
It's an amazing album, and it'll make people feel better about spending their last tenner on a CD.
You've toured with the likes of Supergrass, The Fratellis and Oasis, how brilliant is that! But who else would you like to share a stage with?
There’s not many bands out at the moment that I'd be bothered about playing with, with the exception of Kasabian.
I know the weather is a bit rubbish at the minute, but it is festival season, so what three bands would you have to headline your dream festival?
The Beatles, The Smiths and The Stone Roses.
And you’ve been busy boys in the past, so what has been your favourite musical memory to date?
Recording at Abbey Road has to be up there, that was a surreal experience to say the least.
Now, a bit of an emotive one for you… If all of the bands equipment was on fire, what one piece would you save and why?
For me it would have to be the bass that I used for most of the album sessions, sentimental value and whatnot.
If you could only listen to one CD for the rest of your life, what would it be?
'Revolver' by the Beatles, best album ever made, and one of those albums that no matter how many time you listen to it, you always find something new that you
love about it.
Okay, now we want to ask you some random questions; Tell me about the most terrifying experience of your life…
There's been a few, but driving up to Wick in February when we had all that snow was pretty bad, doing 60 on a country road when you cant see 3 feet in front of you isn't the most fun I've ever had.
What’s the most stupid purchase you’ve ever made?
An antique gas mask. The story's not that exciting.
Why go to the top of a tall building, only to put money in binoculars and look at things on the ground?
Because it gives you a different perspective on things, can make you feel on top of the world, and if its shit you can always jump off...
Brilliant, on that note I’ll let you get back to work!
