As the girls get ready to possibly hit the charts, and not just the dance floor, Louise Masters of the Revelations, despite being bunged up with a cold, takes the time out to talk to Female First about their musical inspirations and how girls in their twenty-somethings deal with the pressure of upcoming fame.
Louise talks of her new single with excitement and pride, like when a young child finally grasps how to tell the time. âWeâve just released Itâs You and thereâs a video and everything. Itâs very exciting.â
She doesnât even seem phased by the fact that it is December, and unlike all other artists who are frantically having panic attacks over the number 1 slot, Louise is calm and says âWe just have to do what everyone thinks is best. Just go with the flow and see what happens.â
Earlier this year, the pop trio were runners up in Eurovision: You Decide, a BBC show to determine who would represent the UK in the Eurovision Song Contest. âThe BBC asked us to do itâ said the redhead.
âTheyâd heard some of the stuff weâd done before that, which had been quite successful and some of our songs had got put onto Radio 2âs playlist. After that we were album of the week for Radio 2 so I suppose our stuff was around the BBC anyway and they heard it and thought itâd be really good to have us on the show. So we thought weâd go for it to get a bit of exposure. It was an exciting experience.â
For an unsigned act, this certainly was exciting, as no one else has ever been selected under those circumstances. Making history, the three beauties started to attract attention, and many associated them with Eurovision favourites ABBA.
âI suppose with Abba, Annika is Swedish in our band so I think people obviously hear her accent, and the female vocals in both acts, but you know, thatâs really quite flattering. We all like the same music and then we all like our own music as well on the side; like, Annika is quite into jazz. Sarahâs a couple of years younger and she likes really current stuff. I tend to listen to lots of Indie bands and stuff like that but we all agree on loving Motown and ABBA.â
In fact, the East Londoner likes British Indie music more than any other, and said she would love to collaborate with someone of that genre. âItâd be really hard to decide as there are so many great acts out there. That would take a lot of debating between us I think. Iâd like to work with a band like The Killers or something. Maybe Jamie Cullum or someone like that. We went to see him once and we all loved him.â
Unsigned, the girls currently rely on gigs and enlarging their fan base in order to quit their day jobs. As writers of their own songs as well, we had to ask, how on earth do they fit it all in? âWe somehow just about manage! I do all sorts of gigs and the other girls do various bits and bobs to keep us busy. We just about manage to squeeze everything in. I havenât had a holiday this year. Maybe next year!â
Describing the self-titled album as âpop, fun, motown live music with girl vocalsâ Louise seems to have hit the nail on the head, but is unsure of their future as a girl group. âWeâd love to do another album. That would be great but weâll have to see first. We always do one thing at a time and follow on things from there, so weâll be waiting to see what happens with this single and deciding what to do next.â
The Revelationsâ Single Itâs You is out now.
