âAll That I Haveâ is the new single from Findlay Brown heralding his forthcoming second album âLove Will Find Youâ, produced by Duffy collaborator Bernard Butler and due for release early next year.
This single, produced by Beyond The Wizards Sleeve (Erol Alkan and Richard Norris, is a slice of retro pop which indicates a new musical direction for Findlay. âAll That I Haveâ is accompanied by a Lord Skywave remix that takes the track to the indie dancefloor.
B-side âThe Boy With The Flameâ is reminiscent of a classic 50âs ballad, with Findlay coming on like a modern day Buddy Holly. Finally there is a brilliant cover of Joe Smoothâs legendary club track âPromised Landâ which fully demonstrates Findlayâs rich, sonorous vocals as he adds a new dimension to the house classic. Remixer of the moment Pilooski completes the package with a rolling bass heavy mix that delves into cosmic disco.
Findlayâs debut album âSeparated By The Seaâ was released in 2007 to huge critical acclaim â The Guardian called it âthe most unlikely classic of the yearâ and gave it a rare 5* rating. The record was a series of love songs written to his girlfriend Marie Nielsen that featured introspective songwriting and highlighted Finâs knack for simple vocal melodies and intensely personal lyrics.
Since then he has been busy writing his new record and the single âAll That I Haveâ is the first fruit of that labour. âLove Will Find Youâ is a very different type of album. For a start itâs not folk influenced. Heâs moved away from that and has been working on the craft of songwriting. âI wanted to work out what it was that made a classic song.â
Findlay explains. âSo far Iâve written 12 demos for the new album and weâve started working on recording them with a couple of different producers. âAll That I Haveâ was recorded with Beyond The Wizards Sleeve who remixed my âLosing the Will to Surviveâ single so brilliantly last year for the 12â release on Peacefrog. The rest of the record will be produced by Bernard Butler.â
The biggest turning point for Findlay was when he broke his leg earlier this year, after the cab driver who dropped him home accidentally ran over him. âIâd already started going back and listening to a lot of records Iâd grown up on. Elvis Presley, soul music, doo wop, Phil Spector, The Righteous Brothers and the like. I had an idea about making a modern record which was influenced by the songwriting of the late 50âs and early 60âs.
I was cooped up at my sisterâs house in London for over a month with my broken leg and I just started writing, trying to work out what made a universally great song, like âStand By Meâ. In my first band Boedekka weâd written some fairly melodic pop songs but we covered up the songs with abstract weirdness and noise to try to avoid being too pop. âSeparated by the Seaâ was all about one voice and a guitar but it gave me the confidence to write the sort of songs I loved. These new songs are the first part of that process.â
