New reports surrounding the upcoming Joker sequel suggest that singer and actress Lady Gaga is in early talks to star, with the movie itself set to be a musical according to a report from The Hollywood Reporter. If the deal goes through, Gaga is likely to play the Joker’s psychiatrist and, infamous DC Comics villain, Harley Quinn.
Directed by Todd Phillips, the film will serve as the follow-up to the 2019 Oscar-winning movie Joker, which took in over $1 billion at the box office for a clearly impressed Warner Bros.
Phillips had previously released a picture teasing the title of the new project as Joker: Folie à deux across social media, also posting a shot of Phoenix reading the script.
This would mark another collaboration between filmmaker Phillips and Gaga, after he served as producer on the 2018 remake of A Star Is Born, which featured Gaga in the lead role opposite Bradley Cooper, for which the team picked up numerous awards across the board.
Gaga would then go on to star in House of Gucci in 2021, as Patrizia Reggiani. Based on the real-life story of how Patrizia had such ambition she would eventually order the murder of her estranged husband, Maurizio Gucci (Adam Driver), the performer delivered another memorable experience on the big screen.
No deal is yet done, but we imagine Warner Bros. will be doing everything in their power to get such a high-profile name on board for what is sure to be one of their most talked about releases, perhaps of all time.
Exactly how a musical will work, when the first movie was such a dark and extremely tragic piece of storytelling, remains to be seen. The feature, however, is in very capable hands.
