The team behind the slasher flick confirmed that a number of audience members were unable to watch the extremely gory horror film – with one viewer even vomiting – although the filmmaker says that it proves that the cast and crew have "done our job".

In a statement, Leone said: "Typically people walk out of a movie because it sucks. When someone walks out of a ‘Terrifier’ film, it’s a testament to the special makeup fx team. I guess we’ve done our job!"

The movie follows Art the Clown (David Howard Thornton) as he attempts to turn Sienna Shaw (Lauren LaVera) and her brother Jonathan’s (Elliott Fullam) Christmas into a living nightmare.

PR representatives for the flick confirmed the gory opening sequence in the picture prevented ‘Terrifier 3’ from getting Hollywood funding, and the director admitted he knew that the sadistic violence present in the previous entries in the series meant he was "going to have eyes over [his] shoulders" for the new movie.

He told LADbible: "I got to meet with studios, like legit Hollywood studios, who wanted to make ‘Terrifier 3’. But before I even had a script, just having meetings and getting the feel that I was going to have eyes over my shoulders, and they were concerned about the levels of gore and this and that.

"I knew they weren't going to let me make this movie based on the first five pages. Like, that's how insane ‘Terrifier 3’ is."

Leone claimed the opening scene was so appalling Hollywood would “never” let him film it.

The 42-year-old director said: "Mark my words. I guarantee you the first five minutes of this movie is going to be very controversial.

"But that's not even the big kill scene. So that's why I was like, I need to just make this movie on my own, because it's too insane.

“If you thought Art the Clown’s reign of terror in part two was extreme, you haven't seen anything yet."
