Day of the Flowers

Starring: Eva Birthistle, Charity Wakefield, Carlos Acosta

Director: John Roberts

Rating: 3/5

John Roberts returns to the director's chair this week with his new film Day of the Flowers and has been written by Eirene Houston.

Day Of The Flowers is a romantic drama about two strong-willed sisters, on a journey through Cuba, who find love & misadventure in the most unusual of places.

Drenched in sunlight and with a fabulous Cuban soundtrack, Day Of The Flowers is a colourful and wryly humorous tale of cross-cultural misunderstandings and lost illusions. Day Of The Flowers will lift spirits and make hearts soar.

Do you know what is so refreshing about Day of the Flowers? This is a film that focuses on two female characters and yet it is not all about their love lives; a refreshing change I think you will find.

Don't get me wrong, there are some romantic elements in there, but they are not the driving force behind the film.

Day of Flowers looks at the sibling bond and how, despite have that connection, two people can be so totally different to one another.

Eva Birthistle and Charity Wakefield both turn in great performances as the chalk and cheese sisters.

Eirene Houston has created two very strong central characters, and the moments where they go head to head are some of the strongest points of the film.

The movie looks fantastic as director John Roberts has made good use of authentic Cuban locations, giving the film a very authentic feel.

Cuba makes a fantastic backdrop to this story, and the cinematography really does bring the film to life and give it an extra layer.

The subplot of family secrets doesn't really work for me and feels a little forced and rushed.

While this addition is a little confusing and rather disrupts the flow of the film, it is the intrigue and charm of the two central characters that will hold your attention through to the closing credits.

The Day of the Flowers is out now.
