It seems that having just one career isn't enough for many musicians these days with many going on to launch an 'acting' career.
But having said there are some, Joaquin Phoenix the most recent, who go the other way. But with the release of the Hannah Montana movie this week Miley Cyrus is just the latest star to juggle both careers.
So here at FemaleFirst we took at look at some of music's biggest names that have, often quite badly advised, moved into movies.
Madonna has enjoyed a music career that has spanned almost three decades churning out classic records such as Like A Virgin, Like A Prayer and so on, so why did she move onto the big screen?
Let's face it her 'acting' work has been nothing short of a disaster did you see Body of Evidence, it was just an excuse for her to get her kit off and have sex, and the awful Swept Away, what was Guy Ritchie thinking?
However 1996 brought her her most critically successful movie in the form of Evita, an adaptation of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical.
Similarly Mariah Carey was one of the biggest selling solo female artists when she decided that she wanted to conquer the big screen too.
And, much like Madonna, it's not gone according to plan with a couple of stinkers. She made her big screen debut in 1999 in The Bachelor alongside Chris O'Donnell and Renee Zellweger.
But it was Glitter in 2001 that provided her with her first starring role in which she took on the role of a struggling musician battling to make it into the industry in the eighties.
However the movie was a box office bomb and it was universally panned by the critics. Later this year she returns to the big screen as another struggling singer, talk about one trick pony, in Tennessee.
In 2002 Britney Spears was at the height of her fame so it seemed the next logical step would be to take on film. However Crossroads wasn't the hit that she expected.
Spears took on the role of a high school graduate who travels to find her long-lost mother. While it was a hit amongst Spears' fans it was panned and she hasn't graced cinema screens since.
However there is one singer turned thespian that has enjoyed some box office success and that is Beyonce Knowles.
She made her big screen debut in 2002 in Austin Powers in Goldmember before going on to have forgettable performances in The Fighting Temptations and The Pink Panther.
But she made an impact as Deena Jones in 2006's Dreamgirls, despite being overshadowed by Jennifer Hudson who went on to win an Oscar for her performance. Since then she has starred in Cadillac Records and is currently top of the American box office with Obsessed.
Others singers who have tried their hands at the old acting lark include Justin Timberlake, Mandy Moore, Jessica Simpson and Eminem.
Jennifer Lopez went the other way kicking off her career in acting before taking on a music career as well, am yet to see a good Lopez movie though!
Hannah Montana the Movie is out now.
