The days are getting longer, the barometer is slowly creeping higher and birds are chirping happily to welcome the arrival of spring. With a long and harsh winter almost behind us, it is time to show your freezer some TLC.
If stored correctly, frozen food has an almost indefinite storage time. So it can be easy to forget that your trusty companion also needs some attention to keep your food as fresh and tasty as the day you purchased it.
Keeping your freezer happy
·Many modern freezers are made to defrost automatically. However, if your freezer is an older model keep an eye out for any build up of ice – if it is over ½ inch thick it is time to defrost!
·A well-stocked freezer is more energy efficient, and may save you money in the long run. But be careful not to over-pack, as this will prevent the freezer from maintaining a low temperature.
·Try to rotate foods and put newly purchased items at the back of the freezer so that older items are used first. This way you do not end up with vintage frozen peas!
·Freeze food in appropriate containers, such as freezer bags and airtight containers, to avoid any freezer accidents..
