The Windsor Festival’s 2012 Spring Weekend will take place from the 15th-18th March and promises to be a weekend filled with a variety of performances, keeping the community as the core focus thereby enabling the development of young talent.
Now in its eighth year, the Spring Weekend will see a traditional mix of musical, literary and family events taking place in and around Windsor with a particular focus on The Tree of Light - a Cultural Olympiad Project taking place this summer.
The two year project is a community celebration of our relationship with trees and brings together 40 diverse community groups from Oxford, Reading, Henley and Windsor.
Fairest Isle will be the first in a series of Festival events marking The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and is a glorious celebration of the British Isles through music and readings in the unique Royal Chapel. The Spring Weekend highlights include:
- The Eton Independent State Schools’ Partnership (ISSP) Choir - led by David Lawrence, an international youth choir trainer. This exciting project brings together seven schools and allows pupils to share experiences, resources and expertise with the intention of promoting the principles of partnership.
With the key theme of ‘Inspiration’, David will run a series of workshops with each school, in preparation for performances in the Spring Weekend and the prestigious Tree of Light Cultural Olympiad project.
- Inspired by The Tree of Light, Spring Leap is an exciting new development that includes a whole weekend of presentations from the local community. Dance, drama, music, song and visual arts will take place at Windsor Royal Shopping between 11am - 4pm on both Saturday and Sunday.
- The 14/4 Literary Dinner is certain to be a glamorous event as guests are treated to 14 exceptional authors and a four course meal in an evening that brings book-lovers, writers and fine culture together for a fabulous feast. Guests will find themselves ‘hosted’ by four different people during the night as the authors move around to new tables between courses.
Amongst the esteemed hosts will be: Alison Weir, author of The Princes in the Tower and most recently Mary Boleyn ‘The Great and Infamous Whore’ , local Essie Fox, author of Somnambulist and Helen Rappaport, whose biography of Victoria and Albert, Magnificent Obsession, is a critical triumph.
"Careful planning has gone into the Spring Weekend and we are honoured to be a major part of The Tree of Light. The Festival has always strived to ensure the community remains the focus and The Tree of Light is a great opportunity to encourage local talent" commented Martin Denny, Windsor Festival Director.
Mr Denny concluded: "We are delighted to have continued our association with fostering young local musical talent with the ISSP Choir and with the assortment of dramatic, musical and literary events, we hope that we have provided a programme suitable for everybody to enjoy."
