Why was now the right time to write your memoir?
I finally got a book deal! I'd been trying to get one for a while and I finally did. It is with a very, very good publisher so I knew if I did a good job, it would get a wide release, and a lot of people would read it. I wasn't interested in writing it on spec and submitting it as a finished product because I don't generally like to make things that people won't definitely consume. That probably comes from being a standup comedian and a fairly social being. I like the transaction part of art as much as its creation. For me it doesn't fully exist till others have snorted or slurped it up. Also, I'd been sober for almost a decade at the time I started and thus had the mental clarity and emotional health necessary to write a book about a topic as horrific as myself.
How does it feel being the ‘funniest man on Twitter’?
Thank you for putting that in quotation marks. I am surely not the funniest man on Twitter, but I am very very happy that people, or "enough" people consider me funny. I am very grateful when others make me laugh, so if I do that for others, I guess that must basically mean I'm a saint or a sort of minor Pope.
How quickly did Twitter become a big part of your daily life?
I suppose it took a few months. At first nobody really realized its best use was jokes, then @serafinowicz shone a light on the path for the rest of us in 2009 and we were off to the races.
Why do you enjoy antagonizing political figures, powerful retailers and the Kardashians?
They're not people. I like, nay love, people. They're conglomerates, corporations and they exist to subjugate, confuse and steal money and hope from people. They're rubbish, and my mother raised me to take out the rubbish.
This is your first book, are there any plans for another?
Yes. I don't know anything beyond that.
What is next for you? Do you have any plans to come to the UK in 2014?
Yes, I'll be back in the UK no later than March to do some live shows. I was there four times in 2013, and I hope to keep up the trend. I'll record another standup special in 2014 as well.
