-
My phone lights up
in the dead of the night.
A silent buzzing,
breaking the peace
of a well-made bed.
It is you.
I stare at the phone,
wondering if I should fall prey
To the charms
of a conversation that I know
only too well.
The words,
the tone,
the voice,
have followed me
faithfully
for twenty two years.
“Where are you?”
I will reply with a lie
Again.
A pause from you.
A sigh from me.
And a goodbye
that sounds a lot like
silence.
