Andy and Carl from Journey South reached the final of X Factor in 2005 and went on to have a half a million selling No.1 album. Their second album HOME is in the shops now. Here are their opinions on last Saturdays show.
Andy Well, what a week, who would have guessed the newspaper reports about Emily? I must say I have now watched the video and if I hadnt seen with my own eyes, I wouldnt have believed it. She looks so innocent. Clearly hanging round with the wrong crowd. Its such a shame.
Carl Yeah I think when they lowered the age to 14, no-one would expect they would have a past to hit the papers. It is very sad as this could have been the biggest opportunity of her life.
Andy It could have really thrown the other contestants this week, some might have their own skeletons that theyre scared might come out. Thats the odd thing about going from obscurity to being on the biggest TV show overnight. Im sure that most people have a story they wouldnt want to go in the papers. I was always wondering which of my ex girlfriends would pop out of the woodwork.
Carl I think it might have upped the ante slightly as I thought most of them performed better than last week. Leon was a really good opener and the song and style really suited him, its scary going on first but he handled it really well. For me, though Beverley was the performance of the night, the song choice for her was spot on and it worked really well, she seemed confident and looked the part.
Andy The big band thing can go either way as that style doesnt always suit everyone. I know Simon does seem to have a real soft spot for Same Difference but how S Club 7 can be classed big band surprises me??? It used to remain true to the genres and pick real songs in that category, rather than adapt the song to fit. I just didnt get that bit at all.
Andy Yeah she was miles better than last week and looked really sexy and pretty. I thought that Rhydian was way over the top. He clearly has a fantastic voice but dressing in fur coat and sequinned suit sort of made it that you didnt even notice his vocal. I think theyre making him look foolish when he doesnt need to.
Carl Me too, I think he will be in the final, but I cant quite warm to him as a person yet.
Andy Thats because theyre making him try too hard and theres something quite off putting about that. I really like Nikis voice and think that people will buy into her as a person, I liked her singing All that Jazz and thought she coped with it better than most would, but all that sexing her up, didnt really work in my opinion and I agreed with Simon, I thought the bit with the trumpet was a bit cheap and tacky looking.
Carl No they seemed to want to put too many frills in this weeks programme and gimmick it up a bit too much and is it me or is Louis going a bit overboard and over theatrical?
Andy Not sure the bottom two were the worst of the night, but still not getting the Hope thing. Id have sent them home out of the two that were there. Although I thought they looked gorgeous, so maybe Id have kept them in on that basis?
Carl I think both had really bad songs to sing, Hanky Panky is so monotone and even a great vocalist would have struggled with that and they did for most of the song, so on that performance Id have probably sent them home as well.
Andy I think over the next few weeks it is going to get really competitive. I remember when we were in. You start off just hoping you wont be first out and then after a couple of weeks you start to actually believe you could win, they will all be starting to get that feeling now.
Carl Yes you can tell their confidence is growing, but I still think it is anybodys race.
