Gideon and the team investigate what appears to be a ritualistic killing.
When a small Virginia town’s star quarterback is found dead on a hiking trail and his cheerleader girlfriend snatched, investigating officers are shocked to find the skeletal remains of another victim nearby – also killed by a blow to the head.
They call in the BAU when they spot something at this second scene that could potentially cause public uproar: a satanic symbol and the words ‘Satan loves LOD’ carved into a tree.
Candle wax near the skeleton also seems to suggest that some kind of macabre ritual has taken place here – but is that really on such a well-travelled path?
While Gideon instructs Garcia to investigate possible explanations for the ‘LOD’ scrawl, the locals are rounded up to help search for the missing girl.
“This type of unsub [unknown subject] can’t resist injecting himself into a show like this,” says Gideon as he surveys the gathered townspeople.
“He’s here with us.” Background checks reveal a couple of likely suspects, including an ex-convict reverend and a man convicted of assault.
