Rating: 5/5
Jazz and Blues artists are filtering more and more into the mainstream and I am delighted to see Saffron Byass finally release her great debut album Speak Your Truth.
This is a delightful album from start to finish with Saffron on top form both vocally as well as lyrically.
But this is not a run of the mill jazz/blues album as opening track can You Feel It? Shows as there is a fabulous electric guitar solo in the middle track - which brings a real contemporary feel to the song.
There is a real passion not just for this genre but music in general from Saffron as she brings every song to life with her beautiful vocals.
Send Her Love is a perfect example as her vocals take centre stage, supported just by a piano and the odd twang of a guitar; it works so well and is a stark contrast to the opening track.
She picks the pace up with Set Your Soul On Love, which is perhaps one of the most traditional sounding jazz tracks on the album - showing that she can nod back to the past as well as bring a fresh and contemporary feel to this genre.
Set Your Soul On Love one again shows off Saffron’s great vocals, and she sings about the uplifting power of love - and there is a real upbeat feel to this track.
Singing about love, loneliness, peace and living in the present moment there is a real spiritual feel to the lyrics on this record but she sings about a whole host of topics that an audience can easily relate to.
There is a real mix of tracks on this record from the uplifting songs such as The Riverbed Blues and Set Your Soul On Love to the very emotional Let It Go and Send Her Love.
There is a really genuine emotion in Saffron’s vocals on tracks such as Let It Go that she leads you to believe and get lost in what she is singing.
The production on this album is just pitch perfect as her vocals and the messages behind the tracks are never lost because of clumsy or an over the top backing track.
This really is a stunning album from Saffron Byass who brings a real fresh and contemporary feel to this genre - miss this album at your peril!!!
