Luke Leighfield may only be twenty four years old but New Season is his fourth studio album and this is perhaps his most mature release to date.
Slow Down is an incredibly powerful opening track to this album; just listen to the words as Luke sings about taking time to take in what’s going on around you as your time on earth is brief.
It’s powerful stuff and Luke’s vocals are supported beautifully by the piano and it really is an uplifting song and it introduces you to his singing and writing style perfectly.
New Season is one of the more up tempo tracks on the record, and it is also one of the strongest, this energy is coupled with really powerful lyrics as Luke sings about facing all the troubles and problems that may come his way - ‘it hasn’t killed me it has made me stronger’ and ‘when the waves are breaking over my head I am going to stand tall’ are words that any listener can relate to.
That is what is so great at Luke’s songs he sings about everyday events and emotions that people can understand - there is a real spiritual feel to the lyrics on this album. But it’s not all about facing the difficulties of life as It’s You is a good old fashioned love song
We are so use to singer-songwriters really using an acoustic guitar in their work but this is where New Season bucks the trend as this is a piano rich album.
The piano replacing the acoustic guitar really is a breath of fresh of air, and is works so well with Luke’s vocals.
There is a real simplicity to the beginning of many of the tracks on the album, opening song Slow Down is the perfect example, but Leighfield slowly adds in layers of guitars and drums to really build up the tracks to a powerful conclusion.
There is not a weak track on this record The One Thing is another upbeat track this has these pitch perfect and almost haunting melodies while Do Not Settle, the final track on the album, is a really great message song.
New Season is not just about Luke’s vocal and writing abilities but it shows off perfect layering on the tracks, which is stunning given his tender years.
He seems to mix a whole host of instrumental sounds from the piano, guitar, drums, horns and strings so effortlessly it really is great to listen to and you just get swept away in the lyrics and the swell of the backing instruments on each track.
