The Artist

The Artist

The likes of War Horse and The Descendants may have been early Oscar favourites but there is one movie that really has taken everyone by surprise... I'm talking about The Artist.

Yes do not be surprised if this movie waltzes away with the Best Picture gong later this year as it seems to be winning over audiences and critics everywhere.

Director Michel Hazanavicius has shot the film in black and white and it his also a silent movie - guaranteeing that you will see nothing else like it this year.

Set in 1927 the movie follows silent movie superstar George Valentin - but his career goes on a downward slide with the birth of talking pictures.

So just what awards potential does this movie have?

It would be great to see the Academy take a punt on a film that is so different to everything else that will be battling it out for the Best Picture prize.

The film has already picked up six Golden Globe nominations and it will be interesting to see where these awards go in a few weeks time.

Jean Dujardin has also already won Best Actor at the Cannes Film Festival and, finger crossed, he should pick up an Oscar nod for his great work.

The critics awards are also in full swing at this time of year and the movie has picked up Best Film at the likes of New York Film Critics Circle Awards, Washington D.C. Area Film Critics Association & Boston Society of Film Critics Award.

The Academy has a nasty habit of sticking to the same old thing when it comes to handing out gongs, biopic pictures, war movies and so on but could The Artist really buck that trend this year?

You have to admit it would be a very refreshing change!!
