SPITERI SORRY FOR IDOL STARS
TEXAS singer SHARLEEN SPITERI feels sorry for unknowns who are thrust into the spotlight by TV talent contests like POP IDOL and its US counterpart, AMERICAN IDOL - because she still struggles with her fame despite having had years to get used to it.
The I DON'T WANT A LOVER singer is uncomfortable when she is recognised in the street and she finds it hard to understand how wannabe pop stars cope with the transition from anonymity to celebrity in the space of a few weeks.
She says, "I feel sorry for these Pop Idol kids. It takes a lot to go from being unknown to getting shouted at every time you enter a supermarket.
"People ask me about being famous, but when we started there really wasn't this obsession with fame and now, perhaps because I've been around so long, I hardly get hassled at all."
