Metallica will quit music when they become a "joke".
The US heavy metal band, whose ninth studio album 'Death Magnetic' is released this month, have no desire to continue performing into their 60s unless they are taken seriously.
Drummer Lars Ulrich, 44, said: "That is the $64,000 question. The Rolling Stones are setting a great precedent, but Charlie Watts doesn't play drums on songs like 'Fight With Fire' every night, no disrespect.
"Will we be able to play what we do when we are 65? I don't know. When it becomes a joke, we will stop."
Lars also admits he and frontman James Hetfield are shocked one of their chart rivals haven't yet managed to steal their crown as the kings of modern metal.
He explained: "I was thinking the other day about how everyone expects us to continue to release albums that define the genre, to 'save' metal. And that is a lot of f***ing pressure. Why hasn't anyone dethroned us yet?"
'Death Magnetic' is released on September 12.
