Keira Knightley's charity dress

3 months ago 01st Feb 15:00

Keira Knightley's 'Atonement' dress is being auctioned for charity.

The stunning green silk evening gown worn by the British actress as Cecilia Tallis in the romantic World War II movie will be sold in an online auction to raise money for Variety - The Children's Charity of Southern California.

The auction opened online at www.clothesoffourback.org today (01.02.08) with a minimum bid of $1,000. It is due to close on March 1.

The description on the website reads: "Memorably worn during the crucial emotional and romantic sequences by Ms. Knightley as Cecilia Tallis, opposite James McAvoy as Robbie Turner, the backless dress was taken directly from the production's archives and is one of a handful that was made specifically for Ms. Knightley to wear during filming. Multiples were fashioned because of the fragility of the dress."

The gown has been authenticated by costume designer Jacqueline Durran, who is nominated for an Academy Award for her work on 'Atonement'.

Variety is a non-profit organisation which aims to assist addicted, abused, neglected and physically-challenged children.

'Atonement' is up for seven Oscars at this month's Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
