Coldplay's military record

2 months ago 17th Jun 13:15

Chris Martin says working with Brian Eno was like being in boot-camp.

Coldplay worked with the legendary producer on their new album, 'Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends', and the frontman said Brian and co-producer Markus Dravs "broke down" the band.

Chris told America's Rolling Stone: "Brian and Markus broke us down in a sort of military boot-camp way. Within 20 minutes, we'd forgotten about any previous record sales."

Chris admitted that Brian had some harsh words for the band - which they willingly listened to.

He added: "Brian said, 'Your songs are too long. And you're too repetitive, and you use the same tricks too much, and big things aren't necessarily good things, and you use the same sounds too much, and your lyrics are not good enough.'

"You deal with it. You can either sit 'round, look at your platinum discs and say, 'F**k you, you're all wrong,' or you can go, 'OK, he's probably got a point.' "

The 'Violet Hill' singer also admitted he agreed with some of the criticism levelled at 2005's 'X and Y', in particular a piece in the New York Times which branded the band "the most unsufferable of the decade."
