Like A Thief Interview

1 month ago 10th Apr 10:18

Holly Jazz Lowe AKA Like A Thief left her seaside home of Scarborough for the bright lights of London to pursue a music career.

But after a failed contract with Mercury in her teens Holly is now backed by a band together they are Like A Thief and things have never looked so bright.

I caught up with Holly to talk Like A Thief, her past in the music industry and what lies ahead for the band and her as a solo artist.

You had a record deal with Mercury at the age of seventeen only for it to be scrapped - where did it all go wrong?

Oh God, who knows! Who knows what goes on inside these big companies! Basically, I did a whole album with them, all very big-time, all very exciting (recording on Pete Townsend's floating barge studio, dinner on deck, feed the ducks in between vocal takes etc!) but before we even finished mixing, so before anything got released we heard that the managing director who had signed me, plus nearly all of the staff had been sacked and all these new people came in.

I guess they wanted to start the label sort of from fresh so loads of people got dropped, established people and new people like me. Ho hum.

How did you recover from that did it dent your confidence or questions your choice of career and decisions that you had made?

I know it sounds stupid, but I wasn't all that bothered really. I mean, I was like, 19 so it's not like that had been my last chance or anything. And like, what? Cos I'd been dropped off Mercury that meant I wasn't a musician anymore? No way.

It certainly didn't knock my confidence or make me question my career, if anything it made me more determined.

I did put me off major labels though. Gosh the thought of being with a major now, actually just makes me recoil a little bit!

You are now backed by a band and together you are Like A Thief how did you all meet?

Denzil, the guitarist is my friend from back home in Scarborough. We've been playing together years, ever since the post-Mercury days. We, and some others, went and did this season up in the Alps playing the apres-ski thing (which was totally fun and amazing) and when we got back we got a taste for being places other than Scarborough.
