Russian pop stars Na-Na have escaped unscathed after a jet plane they were travelling on caught fire and exploded on New Year's Day.
The bandmembers were on board a Moscow-bound Kogalymavia Airlines flight from Surgut, Siberia when a fire broke out in one of the aircraft's engines as it taxied on the runway.
Chaos erupted on the plane as panicked passengers scrambled for the emergency exits moments before it turned into a fireball, killing three people and injuring at least 43 of the 124 on board.
Singer Sergei Grigoriyev admits he feared for his life as the drama unfolded.
He says, "There was a thick, black smoke and people started to panic. They were literally stepping on each other's heads. I saw my life flash before me."
The stars managed to emerge unharmed after making it to an emergency exit over the Tupolev-154 jet's wing. The safety record of the Tupolev-154 aircrafts came under scrutiny after its introduction in the 1970s and were taken out of service by bosses at Russia's national carrier airline Aeroflot in January 2010.
Officials at Russia's transportation watchdog have since ordered all similar plans to be grounded until an investigation into the fatal jet explosion to determine the cause of the fire is complete.
