It's been twenty years since Anthony Hopkins chilled us to the bone with his performance as Hannibal Lecter in Silence of the Lambs, an adaptation of the book by Thomas Harris.

He is back with his new movie The Rite, directed by Mikael Håfström. To celebrate the release of the movie on DVD and Blu-Ray we take a look back over 20 years of Hopkins movies.

2011 - The Rite

Inspired by true events, The Rite follows skeptical seminary student Michael Kovak (Colin O’Donoghue), who reluctantly attends exorcism school at the Vatican.

While in Rome, he meets an unorthodox priest, Father Lucas (Anthony Hopkins), who introduces him to the darker side of his faith.

2010  - The Wolfman

The Wolfman saw Hopkins team up with filmmaker Joe Johnston last year - a movie which also starred Benicio Del Toro.

Upon his return to his ancestral homeland, an American man is bitten, and subsequently cursed by, a werewolf.

2007 - Beowulf

Hopkins stepped into the world of performance capture in 2007 when he took on the role of King Hrothgar in Robert Zemeckis' Beowulf - a new take on an old tale.

The warrior Beowulf must fight and defeat the monster Grendel who is terrorizing towns, and later, Grendel's mother, who begins killing out of revenge.

The movie opened at #1 at the America box office.

2005 - The World’s Fastest Indian

Hopkins swaps his native Welsh accent for a Kiwi drawl in this film about a man who spent most of his life building a 1920s Indian bike to help him set the land-speed world record.

1998 - Meet Joe Black

Meet Joe Black saw Hopkins star alongside Brad Pitt and Claire Forlani in a movie that tackles death.

A media mogul acts as a guide to Death, who takes the form of a young man to learn about life on Earth and in the process, fall in love with his guide's daughter.

1997 - Amistad

Hopkins stars in another biopic as John Quincy Adams, 6th president of the USA. In a story about slavery Hopkins shines with his powerful performance.

He went on to be nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in the movie.

1996 - Surviving Picasso

Anthony plays the eccentric painter and sculptor Pablo Picaso in this biopic of his life and his relationship with mistress Francois Gilot.

1995 - Nixon

In 1995 Hopkins took on the role of one of the most famous U.S. Presidents - Richard Nixon in a biopic movie directed by Oliver Stone.

A biographical story of former U.S. president Richard Milhous Nixon, from his days as a young boy to his eventual presidency which ended in shame.

Once again his performance was given a Best actor Oscar nomination - but he lost out to Tom Hanks.

1993 - The Remains of the Day

The Remains of the Day was an adaptation of the Kazuo Ishiguro novel and was directed by James Ivory.

The movie sees Hopkins team up with fellow British actor Emma Thompson as he took on the role of James Stevens in the movie.

Told as a series of flashbacks leading up to WWII, a butler looks back on a lifetime spent in the service of an aristocratic English family.

1991  - Silence of the Lambs

Anthony Hopkins plays the infamous cannibal Hannibal Lector in the groundbreaking Silence of the Lambs.

His sinister delivery and indiocincrasies cemented Lector’s place as one of the scariest characters to grace the silver screen.

Hopkins reprieved the role in Hannibal (2001) and Red Dragon (2002). He picked up a Best actor Oscar for his chilling performance.

The Rite is out on DVD and Blu-Ray now.
