Veteran actor Paul Newman has donated $5,000 (£2,500) to a Michigan school to fund a class trip to Scotland. The 82-year-old sent a cheque to the drama department at Ypsilanti High School, enabling students to visit the upcoming Fringe Festival in Edinburgh.Newman left a note with the cheque, which read: "The enclosed contribution is sent with every good wish for continued success in your worthy endeavours."It is not the first time Newman has donated to the country's education. Last month (01Jun07), he donated $10 million (£5 million) to arts school Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio.As well as his acting Newman is also famous for his philanthropy. In 1982 he set up Newman's Own, a range of food products, with writer A.E. Hotchner. The money that is made is given to charity and by 2006 Newman's Own had raised $200 million.In 1986 he co-founded the Hole In The Wall Gang Camp, a camp for seriously ill children. Newman who's movie career spanned fifty years appearing in classic such as Hud, The Hustler and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid retired from from acting in May of this year claiming that he couldn't continue acting at the level that he wants to.
