Laser Hair removal

Postby wanton on Wed Mar 17, 2004 8:52 pm

I am considering having it done on my bikini area. After researching it it seems that about 6x are needed & it's guaranteed as long as you get the # recommended. Anyway I wanted to know what people actually experience. How does it feel. Do you have to have visible hair when you go? Was there a noticed improvement in hair loss immediately? Any skin irritation? Any pros or cons or warnings

I had it done on my bikini area last year. Around 6 treatments, one every 5-6 weeks. A bit grew back, but a HUGE improvement over what was there before. No more ingrown hairs - yay! There are a few different kinds of lasers. It's been a while, so I don't remember exactly what kind I had.
You need to have some stubble when you go. The second the laser hits it, the hair turns white and after a few days falls out. You can shave at that point, but the hairs were invisible so I never bothered. It hurts. It feels like a splash of hot oil or a pin prick. Over and over again. There's also a disturbing zapping noise, like a bug zapper. You can get some over the counter topical creams that numb your skin. I got it done at my OB/GYN and they prescribed a cream that really helped.

Despite the pain, I'm thrilled I had it done.

what about women with dark, coarse hair? Will it work on us? Not that I know what your hair colour is but I thought I'd ask anyway. I've heard it doesn't work that well on coarse hair

How much would that cost roughly

I'm not sure how much it would cost but I bet it's expensive. I live in Canada so the prices are probably different here. You'd have to call around to find out.

A guy friend of mine had a spider vein on his nose zapped a while back. The inital zap and the follow up cost him $350. I'd bet that laser hair removal is on par with that but I'm only guessing.

anyone out there know? Annette, what did yours cost you?

hair grew back

I had 3 laser treatments on my upper lip and two on my bikini line about six months ago and although all the hair dropped out about 2 weeks after the treatment, it did eventually grow back, as much as before. This has rather put me off having any more done. I thought that I had done my research pretty throroughly and I was delighted with the results at first, but after about 2 months it was like there was no different. I was going to continue with the treatments, but felt that I needed to see some permanent results before I invested any more money. Pity. The bikini treatments were about £100 each time - that was to get rid of everything except a 1" strip down the middle. :(

Before the laser, the technician usually shaves off the hair. The laser doesn't hurt a lot and it's very quick. I had the cooltip diode laser which is pushed against the skin to it works better than the lasers held above the skin. You need around 5-8 treatments and lasers work better on people with light skin and dark thick hair. after your treatment you may have some bumps but they go away in a few hours. What else, ummm, the hair eventually falls off the following few weeks. Every treatment takes off around 20% of the hair permently, that's why you need 5-8 treatments.

After the treatment you should not wax, you can only shave because the laser is 'attracted' to the dark hair follicle. when you wax, sometimes it removes the root so the laser is not able to kill the follicle. WEAR SUN SCREEN. you don't want your skin to burn more or get discolored.

Also, laser's don't work as well for people with blond/red hair (root/follicle is not dark enough) or people with tan/olive coloured skin (laser may burn your skin because it cannot differentiate between hair root and skin color). If you have tanned/olive skin the technician may prescribe you a creme to apply a few weeks before the treatment to lighten the skin so the hair follicles are easier for the laser to get.

I'm not sure how much the bikini area is but upper lip is $100, legs are $600. Someplaces give students 50% off.
