is the active light on(usually green)next to the network port?, if it isn't it could be the drivers? Search for Realtek...perhaps new drivers would fix it.
Does the Realtek connection show in control panel, network connections, as active/connected? perhaps it's disabled?
Also with some set ups you need to power off the whole lot, including cable modem or set top box, pc, router(if you have one). Leave a few minutes, then power on again, modem first, then router, then pc. In each case allow them to settle before switching the next bit on.
post back if none of these work and I'll think of other things to try....

Have you got the correct cable? Not all cat 5 Cables are equal. You could have a cross over cable! or some other specially made cable.

If you're getting a "cable is unplugged" message, that means

a) it's switched on in the bios
b) the drivers are installed
c) as mentioned, you've probably got the wrong kind of cable

If you hold both ends of the cable up and check the order of the wire colours where they go into the plug you can tell. If they are all the same at both ends it's a straight cable, if they're not it's a crossover cable.

When I wanted to copy some stuff from laptop to main PC it took me about 3 hours before I figured out I needed a crossover cable, easy mistake to make
