At what age is it no longer appropriate

Postby Cyntia on Sun Sep 28, 2008 9:50 pm

At what age is it no longer approriate for boys and girls to bath or see each other naked? I have three kids two girls 8 and 11 and a boy who is 14. Up until about a month ago they had all showered/ bathed together. None of them had started puberty so I really didnt see the harm. Well that all changed when my 11yr old daughter started to notice her breasts growing and pubic hair starting to grow. Now she wants to bath privately which I respect, but my oldest son doesnt understand why she gets to shower and bath in private and she still gets to come into the bathroom when he and my 8 yr old showere and bath. I want to tell him its because she is becomming a women, but I don't want him to be embarassed of his lack of develoment especially being the oldest.

Cyntia,

Does your son ever get an erection around the girls?

Geez, another troll looking to get off by pretending to be a mother.

I've had two 14 year old boys and if a mother doesn't see that as just damn wrong, she's a perv.

14 years old sounds fairly late for a boy not to have begun puberty, although it's not unheard of. While children mature at different ages (I myself babysit children in a broad age range) I generally am out of the picture for baths around the age of 12. But I guess there are some scenarios where it would be possible - e.g. if there is a a developmental disease of some sort. Have you not tried to teach the boy to bathe on his own?

I have in the past given siblings baths together, although generally not for mixed genders much beyond the age of 8 if I recall. Certainly if the older girl is requesting to bathe alone that should be respected, and if she can do it on her own without you then that should be fine. If the boys themselves have no issues still being bathed together and need help then I don't see a problem with it, since you say the boy hasn't started puberty. (I would expect the boy to also request privacy though, if for no reason other than the fact that the one girl got it.) But if that girl is given privacy from her siblings then I think that should be reciprocated and she shouldn't be allowed to see them in the bath either. This is a little different than a situation where, for example, an older sister has assisted in bathing a younger sibling for some time and therefore is used to it and it was accepted by all. Here the children were on an equal playing ground, but now one gets to be in private. She was never bathing the others, just one of three receiving a bath. Requesting and gaining privacy for oneself should be accompanied by the act of recognizing it for others.

If your son is asking why his sister is getting different treatment, I think it's reasonable to say that his sister is beginning to change and feels more comfortable bathing separately. If you haven't had "that talk" with him yet this would be a good opportunity. And you can tell him that children mature physically at different ages (with girls generally starting before boys) and that he doesn't need to worry and that he should be starting soon himself.

the girl should let her brother see her naked if she keeps going in to the bathhroom and looking at him even if she as started pubity the boy must feel upset. It can not belong before he starts pubity. It would be good for them both to see each other as there bodies change

Yeah, so I took this pubity speaking class in college and it so rocked.
Pubity speaking was always so hard on me, but the pubity instructor made it so easy. Did anyone else have problems when it came to pubit speaking?
