Too old to wear knee socks to school?

I'm sorry but I find this a very old-fashioned way of thinking and quite inappropriate for anywhere around where I live.

As a school girl I wore dark opaque tights which looked a lot smarter than socks
I did wear short socks in the summer at primary school with a dress, however secondary school was trousers or skirt and tights.

As long as the tights aren't very thin and black (laddering all the time) I think that they look more than appropriate.

Also limiting a child to not being allowed and trousers what-so-ever seems a little inappropriate to me

Lisa_66, I am assuming your daughter will be starting year 10 in September, so why now and not sooner have you decided she must wear a pinafore with socks? Have you had problems with her behaviour, and/or is her school work suffering? From what you appear to say she will be only girl dressed in such a juvenile manner and will not find it particularly pleasurable. The danger is she could become a target for bullies and if she feels humiliated by her outfit she may end out lacking in self confidence and you end up with her getting poor exam results; the opposite of what you are trying to achieve.

I agree with the last two posts that it is unfair for a girl to be dressed like a child if all those about her are wearing tights and more grown up clothes. By all means dress your daughter the way you think is proper when she is out of school but don't humiliate her in front of her classmates.

Although I can see the point of the last couple of posts, her behaviour and marks slipped a lot last year and she was constantly in trouble regarding her uniforn (re. rolling her skirt up). However, she won't be the only one. There are now around 7 girls who will be wearing a pinafore, and the school has officially made the pinafore part of the uniform , and anounced it in the end of term newsletter. Any girl who repeatedly has to to reminded about the length of their skirt will be required to wear a pinafore, to prevent them rolling it up. It's not that childish- in fact the pinafore has been fashionable this year.

However, the school are happy for her to wear a pinafore, especially as she won't be able to roll it up like a skirt. We've decided on tights as we want to understand she is there to study, and not be on a fashion parade. We can't see why she can't wear socks rather than tights. Buildings are heated prperly these days and she has long coat for the winter.

This coming year, my daughter will be wearing pinafore dresses to school, instead of trousers and skirts, despite being at secondary shool. John Lewis do two styles up to the age of 16 (although the lager sizes seem in short supply). They are smart and you can't roll over them hem to make them shorter. She'll be wearing these with socks, instead of tights.

I wore a grey pinafore dress with a pleated skirt to end 5th form for school in the eighties with white socks and black lace up shoes. We wore frocks in summer and white ankle socks and brown sandals. I liked wearing uniform but some girls loathed it. Sixth formers wore straight grey skirts and tights with low heel shoes. I don't see anything wrong in girls in socks to year 10 or 11.
