dyeing reddish brown to blonde

Naturally the color of my hair is brown with reddish highlights. Right now it is dyed a slightly redder, deeper brown then it is naturally. I did this at home. I'd like to lighten it a little for the summer (caramel blonde highlights), but I heard that it is hard to make hair that has any red in it (natural and/or dyed) go blonde, because it always turns out orangey. Is this true? How can I avoid it. I know it's always safer to get it proffesionally done, but is there a way that I can do this at home (to save money).
