Period Pain Relief

Hey there...
Just wondering (as i'm in absolute agony) what everyone has found to be the best painkiller in regard to period pains? I currently take Feminax but one of the ingredients was removed a couple of years ago and now they just don't seem to work as well
Please help me find an alternative that works!!

I'm with you there, I've been in agony for the past 2 days, I'm going to be suffering whilst on holiday aswell so really need help asap. I also use to take feminax but haven't in years as I've read about it changing. I've seen that there is a new 'feminax ultra' on the market on the moment I wonder if that is any good?

Nope - dont waste your money ...

I used to swear by the original Feminax and ended up in agony every month when they changed it.

I ended up taking co-codamol with travel sickness meds called Kwells as this made up just about what Feminax used to be.

When I saw the new Feminax I thought yippee

when I tried them I wondered why I had bothered. they did NOTHING, zippo, nada ... in the end on one of the hottest days we have had so far I was curled up in a ball clutching my microwave heat pads.

I personally will not be buying this product again, and wont even finish this pack, cos next month I will rely on something else as I cannot rely on Feminax anymore

I am only 17 but after years of painful periods am becoming tired of the pain that i get every month I just wondered if any body knows of any tablets which i can take to get rid of this pain as it is that severe that it makes me cry and even throw up my doctor gave me Mefanamic acid and Tranexamic acid which hasnt helped at all I'm going on holiday with my boyfriend soon aswel so i dont want to be suffering whilst i am there! somebody please help its driving me mental!

hey i used to suffer from very painful periods enough to make me sick and very faint. i went 2 my doctor and they gave me mefenamic acid to stop the pain and the aso gave me trasenamic acid to stop a heavy flow period. they really do work and i have never looked back since. it may be worth asking your doctor about these to. hope all works out

I forgot I had started this thread! I feel a little better that it wasn't just me who noticed the change in the original Feminax. I thought i had become immune to it hence why it wasn't working! Saw an advert for Feminax Ultra on tv just before and had a quick look _ and was shocked at the price it is being sold for! Considering someone on here has tried it and it doesn't live up to its name!

Will have to see how this month goes and then a trip to the doctors may be needed. Shame they changed the original Feminax, i used to rather enjoy the floaty feeling it gave me as it helped me forget i was even "on!"

I too used to get very faint and sick and used mefenamic acid - they work well.

I used to rely on the old Feminax too - when they changed the formula, all it did was make me feel sick and dizzy. I'm still annoyed about it! I tried Syndol but they just send me to sleep. In the end, like the poster above, I found that a basic codeine-paracetamol capsule plus a Kwells (hyoscine) tablet works pretty much like Feminax used to. It helps the cramps, and counteracts any nausea from the codeine. I saw that 'ultra' the other day so thanks for the tip not to bother!

I used to take feminax 5-6 years ago and it didn't work that well then but haven't tried it recently.

If over the counter painkillers & heat treatment are not working go to your GP for prescription painkillers, if you have spasm type pain you might benefit from Ponstan or another anti-prostaglandin, if you have also developed nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea you will benefit from Buscopan which is usually prescribed for IBS, you can get this from a ordinary chemists but best check with your GP first, it might also be cheaper on prescription but you need to take it 2 days before you start menstruating which can be tricky if you're not super regular so combining these with the pill so you know when it's going to start might be necessary.

If it all gets too much, discuss with your GP the possibily of running 3 pill packs together so you only have a period once every 9 weeks, if this is too much try depo-provera or implanon which often causes menstruation to cease however this brings with it side effects - see my post under implanon side effects - that they don't necessarily warn you about.

This is what I went through, from age 15 to 19 it severly affected my life and I couldn't see how I could cope for the next 40 odd years until menopause, however there is help out there, don't ever let your GP or anyone else tell you 'it's not really that bad'.

I suffer with really bad period pain and have tried the options mentioned. I had been taking cocodrymol which helped intially but my tolerence to pain killers is really bad after years of taking them and I get really sick with them. I have been toying with the idea of a hysterectomy but I am too young (36). I have been put on the pill but this is not a good option as I put on weight and causes depression. I am trusting my doctor and tying the one she as perscribed and going to give it three months for symptons to settle down. It annoys me as I can't appear to have kids (addopted after years of treatment) so do not need the plumbing or the contraception.

I am interested in the option mentioned of taking the pill through so that you only have a period every three months. If the pill settles this is definitely something I am going to look in to. So thankyou for opening my mind to a non surgical way out.
