I have just installed Vista Business on my PC last weekend. I am taking it easy and not installing everything on it yet that i would normally use because its the first time i have used Vista and i want to see how it all works and performs before i go much further. I also want to get used to the new operating system as well.

I think i came across my first 'Whoa, Whats going on here' moment last night. I did a search for a file and the search results said it was in a folder so i went to that folder and the file was not there???

I checked and double checked the location as reported in the search results and even performed the same search a few times and still the same, the file was not where the search results said it was.

So i did a manual search for the file and found it within a folder that was in the folder that the search result said it was (<<<<Does that make sense?)

So the search result said it was in c:\Temp\whatever\photo
But the file was actually in c:\temp\whatever\photo\another folder

Strange and does not give me confidence.

That's really weird as the way I understood it was that the vista search system works from an index rather than scanning the folders (although it would scan the folders if the index wasn't built or indexing was disabled).

If it's working from the index it doesn't actually know where in the folder hierarchy a file would be when it finds it, so it would effectively go to the file and ask "what folder are you in" and then go to that folder and say "what folder are you in?" etc. until it can't go any further.

Can you replicate this at will? If so you should probably have a chat with ms support or the newsgroups from support.microsoft.com.

I will have another look at this problem and see if it is still doing it.

I was having another mare with Vista over the weekend. I cannot get used to the thing asking for confirmations for everything i do all the time.

At the weekend i was asking Vista to delete a file and it said 'are you sure' i answered 'yes' and then it went on 'are you sure you want to delete this' 'Yes' 'are you sure you want to move this file to the bin' 'Yes, goddamit!!' then it pottered about for a bit and then informed me that it could not complete the request because the file was in use or something.

It seems to be if i have the folder selected in Windows Explorer then right click and delete it thinks the folder is in use by Explorer?? which is daft.

I am gonna have to disable the asking for confirmations feature to start with i think.

Ah after further reading i can see what is going on. There is a message popping up from the bin asking me if i am sure i want to move the file/folder to the bin. Then after that i get a message from the user account control asking me for permission to carry out the file/folder deletion and i am sure i was asked a third time before the pottering about bit and the denying to do it anyway bit.

I have found ways to disable it all now so will give that a go tonight.

This is only the beginning of your Vista problems. Vista has quite a few quirks with the file system.

If you run wireless, check your communication speed. Also, if you use the Flash player, make sure it works correctly. If you use DreamWeaver, make sure it can find all your files.
