|
|
I will be going to jail for 10 days, I am 45 year old female and do not know what to expect.
What should I wear when I surrender?
What can I take with me?
Will I be allowed to wear my own shoes and clothes?
Will I be strip searched?
Any advice will be appreciated. |

You've been a naughty girl, haven't you?
Never mind, you'll do fine. Yes, I think you will be strip searched. I am not sure if you are permitted to wear your own clothes - likely they will be provided for you.
I imagine you can wear anything (within reason) when you surrender.
There will be a limit on how many items you are permitted to take, so find out about this first then decide what you need to take with you. |

I've always gotten a real kick out of this song by The Offspring. More applicable to the male malefactors, but you get the idea...
| Quote: |
when you're in prison, don't turn the other way
keep your back against the wall
when you're in prison, don't turn the other way
do not bend at all
oh don't pick up the soap, pick up the soap
it's bad for you
oh don't pick up the soap, pick up the soap
someone will be waiting there for you
when you're in prison be sure to stay awake
always lie upon your back
when you're in prison be sure to stay awake
keep you from attack
oh don't be no one's bitch, be no one's bitch
it's bad for you
oh don't be no one's bitch, be no one's bitch
they won't help you make it through.
when you're in prison, don't turn the other way
follow what i say to do.
when you're in prison, don't turn the other way
you can make it through
you can make it through
you can make it through |

Be perpared for a lot of boredom as you will spend a lot of time in a small cell with two other women.
You will not be allowed to wear any of your own clothes and must wear prison uniform. You might be able to get a job in the prison doing work. Take it if you can as it will get you out of your cell and relieve the boredom.
You can take a couple of books from the prison library. Do this as reading will help to relieve the boredom too.
Don't be worried about other prisoners most people who are in prison are decent every day folk who just got into crime or ended up in prison through circumstances. Even more serious offenders will just want to get on with their time and shopuld not cause you trouble.
Very few people in prison are dangerous most are in for minor non violent crimes. By the way it is taboo amongst prisoners to ask what they are in for.
Most prison guards are decent people too. Who if you treat them well will treat you well in return. They might listen to your problems and sypathise with you. But do not tell on other prisoners. If you see another prisoner doing something against the rules ignore it. Prisoners consider informers grasses and will turn against you if you are found out to have informed on them.
Apart from that you should be able to make a few friends amongst the other prisoners. Many will be in the same situation as you serving short sentences for very minor offences.
I have never been in prison myself but have known loads of people who have and so know what it is like. I have also spent time in homeless shelters which have similar sorts of people to the ones you find in prison and is also a similar environment. Infact apart from being able to go out during the day a homeless hostel is very similar to a prison. |

I had a DUI conviction a few years ago, and did not complete the required classes that was part of my plea agreement, so the judge sent me to jail for failure to comply with a court order.
With that said my 10 day jail sentence was the most humiliating experience that I have ever had.
I knew it would not be pleasant but did not expect it to be as bad as it was. The booking process was very humiliating, I had fingerprints taken, mug shots and a very extensive search. I had to be transported from the station I surrender at to another detention facility due to overcrowding, I was handcuffed behind my back and had my legs shackled for the trip to the new detention facility. When I arrived at the detention facility my hands were numb and my wrist bruised from being cuffed so tightly.
I had three cellmate in a 12' x 18' cell. There were only 2 bunks so we had 2 plastic bedding containers with very thin matresses in our cell also.
We were allowed out of our cell in a secure pod during the day to watch TV, read ect.... The food was terrible, and I was alllowed 1 visit from my husband during my stay, my no contact. My clothing was taken at booking and I was given a green jumpsuit that was too big and a pair of foam shoes that were also too big, so I was in my socks most of the time. We were responsible for cleaning our cell and pod but it was hard to clean due to all of the grime that was built up. |

Sounds like you had a pretty easy stay to me.
If it was a State or Federal house, you would have had the time of your life (not in a good way) |
