Give me a break! She is really a sad person who cannot stand the idea that others may make $$$$ on her idea. Hurting her creativity? Nah, just another excuse not to write.
If Paramont had stiffed the creative writing of fans of the original Star Trek, Paramont would not have the money making francise that it has... Stargate SG-1 is another well followed saga that has not stiffled its creative fan fiction.
If she wins the court case, it will put just another strangle hold on the publishing world.
I have lost a lot of respect for J. K. Rowling since she has gone to the extent with this court case and wanting to stifle fan fiction based on Harry Potter. She must have been deeply influenced by Voldemort! It is the only explanation.
JK Rowling has always been incredibly lenient when it comes to the Harry Potter fandom. She loves her fans and has never tried to stifle their creativity. She has never taken action against fanfiction, Wizard Rock bands, Harry Potter podcasts, fansites, or numerous other companion volumes to her series. She had no problem with the Lexicon when it was simply a non-profit fansite....in fact, she encouraged it. The problem arises when someone like Steve Vander Ark takes JK Rowling's work and simply reprints it for profit. This encyclopedia that Vander Ark has created is not a commentary on her books. Vander Ark has simply taken JK Rowling's work, word for word, and repackaged it without proper credit to its creator. A win for Steve Vander Ark in this case will not be a win for fans. Instead, it could very well cause copyright holders to more tightly control their ownership, and it could be disastrous to fandom everywhere.
J.K. Rowling is entitled to have her copyrighted creation protected from those who would use HER creativity and success to make money for themselves. Where is the respect for the artist/creator in today's society ? Where is respect in today's world headed ?
