This has likely been asked a thousand times, but my question is if the flower girls wear junior bridesmaids dresses, then is it still OK to dress the ring bearer in a velvet shorts suit and a frilly collar blouse...or does he have to be in a mini tux (which I think are horrible)....The age of the flower girls is 8 and 7 and the ring bearer/page is 6.
If you wish to observe tradition and proper etiquette then the ring bearer should wear a white or navy Eton jacket, short pants that end at the knee, and white socks. The ring bearer is a child and not an adult. Thus, according to etiquette, he should wear a child's outfit. However, some people feel this etiquette is outdated. Thus you see modern ring bearers wearing suits or tuxedos.

JinJin,
Thanks for taking the time to reply and to reinforce my point to my cousin. However, at some point in time, more traditional outfits fell out of style in favor of mini-tuxedos which are gross. The wedding at hand is a traditional morning affair and there will be two flower girls dressed in approximately the same style as the bridesmaids. I have an outfit my son wore years ago that will fit the ring bearer (age 6). Basically, sapphire blue velvet knickers (above the knee), a white blouse with a lace trimmed wide round collar, black T strap shoes (there is a matching bolero / vest to the knickers, the blouse collar was worn out)...and I suppose we would find a pair of white opaque tights to complete the outfit...is that too old fashion? Is it too much of a distraction? I thought it would look wonderful!
The alternative is....
....we then buy a $100.00 (US) Eton suit with a peter pan collar blouse? And what shoes are acceptable , saddle shoes, T-Bars, or simply oxfords? So about $200.00 for a one time occasion? I managed to get my Son wear this outfit only one other time for a family portrait...but I carefully protected it all these years. The Wedding is in December.
