Romney is a Mormon. That will be his downfall. So far he's tried to follow in the steps of other Massachusetts politicians and "pull a John Kennedy," by saying his personal faith is irrelevant to his qualifications for office. Thats a total nonstarter. Politicians in the US and especially presidential candidates are virtually ordered to talk openly about their religious views [ironically in Romneys case thanks largely to Republicans]. There is no way a Republican, especially in a GOP primary, can avoid the issue-if for no other reason than the press won't let them. Plus the Evangelical voter base likens mormonisn nearer to a cult than a religion. He wont get any votes from that quarter.

MM6...welcome back! Good to see you.

I'm hesitant to say we can hardly do worse than we have over the last eight years....I am continuously being surprised at how low our elected leaders can go intellectually. The problem is, Bush is a puppet, and the real evil genius is Cheney.

Like i said, I don't know if he WILL win, but I HOPE he does.

You're right, his religion will hurt him. I think that his religion should be irrelevant, but nonetheless, he's going to be put under the microscope for it-especially considering he's a conservative.

JFK couldn't avoid the religious scrutiny, and neither will Romney.

Rudolph Giuliani, especially if John McCain is his running mate.

I'm cool with Giuliani if he changes his stance on gun control, but McCain? No frickin way! His will to fight terrorism is no different then any of the democratic canidates: it's spineless.

After 8 years of the over grown spoiled rich kid & one time town drunk of Crawford Texas with his religiosity , war mongering , and head up his ass idea he's always right all I want is a grown up !

We need health care , gun control , immigration control from Mexico , aid to education , something done about job loss abroad ,and some maturity in the war on terror .
Alive in spite of myself and looking at the world .........

We also need border control on Canada. You'd be shocked to see how many "questionables" (my own opinion) come in from the northern border, and there is currently only a tenth of the border personnel covering it than is the Mexican border. I like the idea of military armor and artillery, but that's me.

I would also favor 100% tariffs on any products being brought into the US by companies that have eliminated jobs here to go to third world labor markets. See how they like PAYING to do business here at a rate that makes the US wage seem like a dime store spree.

It's always the same. you win the middle (the moderates not ideologically in lock step with either the left or the right) and you win the election. Bush and his cronies and their constant scandals have ripped up a strong relationship with said moderates from '00-'02, they got a pass in '04 because we don't like to change horses in a war, and because they were able to reshape the image of Kerry effectively.

I can't stand romney, i'm not a fan of Hillary, I used to like McCain but have lost respect for him since he cozied back up to bush after Bush beat him with a race baiting campaign in the South 8 years ago, and now his courtship of the religious right to broaden his base has turned me off completely.

I don't think Hillary can win. So it will be interesting. Hopefully Obama can get elected w/o much experience much like Bush, if he has the goods and smarts unlike Bush.

I do agree with Blonde Adult Girl in one fashion though and that's that it is essential for the dems to fight the war on terror (what a stupid, nebulous name that is) if they sweep in '08 and fight it hard. The right and republicans continue to use the "left are pantywaists in war times" argument as a cudgel to beat the piss out of the dems in elections in trying times. To take that blunt intstrument out of their hands the left will need to remind the nation that it was they, rather than republicans, who guided America through the last shooting war of truly global consequence 60+ years ago. Unfortunately the American Chamberlin contingent of "Peace in Our Time" at any cost has held the dems hostage ever since the dems helped use them to oust Nixon/Ford (with Nixon's help).

Win the moderates, then prosecute an effective war in Afghanistan against the resurgent Taliban, and solve to the best of our ability the horrible disaster that is Iraq and the Dem's can win twofold, and stomp for good the toad's "Permanent Majority" farce. That's the goal. Hopefully it's doable. This nation is at its best when it is united, but also has a split power base in the executive, legislative and judicial branches. Stashing the court with idiotic strict constructionists has already suggested a turn towards an intellectually bankrupt antiquity in the judicial branch, one can only hope that whatever is to come in '08, brings stability, and sound government in the future with a blend of the right ideas of the republicans and dems, and less of the aggrandizement that comes from too much power in the hands of either side.

The Queen should take over in '08 revoking the declaration of independence on the grounds that you yankees can't use their freedom and democracy responsibly then they shouldn't be allowed to have it...
