Children's words for genitalia

Postby Ronja on Sat Apr 28, 2007 2:18 pm

OK, this will probably sund really strange...

But the problem is, I don't have English as first language. So I don't know which words for the vagina/vulva/penis that would be proper to teach a child at the age of 2-4. My boyfriend does have English as first language, but where he's from they just call it "the privates". I don't like that word, neither do I want to use "penis /vagina" to a small child... it just seems unnatural to use those words to me.

Which words would you use to a child?

I think it is far better that children use the proper words e.g. penis, vulva etc. Using euphemisms implies that these parts of the body are indecent or dirty and in later life when they need to refer to them, perhaps at the doctor’s, they will find it embarrassing to use the correct words. I have even heard mothers refer to a daughter’s vulva as “front bottom”-how ridiculo

In our house between a boys legs there is a penis and between a girls legs there is a vulva. Since early on the terms have been used.

All but the last two of those are totally inappropriate for a little girl and to be honest I'm not overly impressed with the last two either.
