Running Linux as an OS is for very technically proficient computer users [regardless of the hype that says otherwise].
There are all sorts of software [and even some hardware] compatibility problems to deal with because most software is designed for use with a windows OS.
If you need to ask how to install Linux, you should perhaps reconsider using it as an OS.
If your still keen, it might help to know if the computer you intend to install Linux on has an operating system already on it and what it is [?] as it will have to be re-moved first, the HD reformatted and if you require a duel-boot system [windows and Linux on the same computer] the HD then needs to be partitioned into 2 primary drives. One for each OS.
What version of Linux did you download [to disc?] ? |

| The downloads of Linux, usually come as an iso. This is simply an image of a CD stored in a file. Nero and other burning software will usually transfer this to a CD just by clicking on the iso file. If the machine you are putting this on, is free of Windows and formatted you will have to have a way of booting from a CD or DVD. You might be better off looking in a good newsagents for one of the Linux magazines. Future do a good one (Linux Format). These quite often have free Linux installable disks (Distros) and instructions on what to do. Mandriva is easy to install and will easily install along side Windows with out formatting the drive. But if you are starting with a clear machine or one where you don't mind losing Windows, then any of the Distros are worth trying. |
