I am researching my Family Tree and want to set up a website for it.

Is this called a "domain?" I have visited a couple of websites... www.123-reg.co.uk and www.uk2.net, not to mention my ISP Website Wanadoo. I am confused by all the jargon and what I should do.

Once I have my website, is it easy enough to add text and pictures to it? Do I need extra soft ware for this?

How much is an average website per year?

Hiya

Yes you need to buy a domain name (eg. www.femalefirst.co.uk, except that one is taken Smile lol ) and some webspace either with your existing ISP or another. You can usually buy them together quite inexpensively.

Then you only need publish a main page which is normally index.htm or default.htm and you are up and running.

123-reg are probably the best bet.

They do a package which is the domain name (like www.femalefirst.co.uk) and the "hosting" (which is making your page available to the rest of the web) all in one. The prices are on the website.

As has already been said, you'll need a website name (domain) and some space. As a guide, I pay about £18 a year for a domain name and about 150meg of space.. which is more than enough unless you have lots of videos/pictures to post.

Without getting toooo complicated, if you are expecting a large amount of visitors (famous family perhaps?! Smile ) then you'll need to pay a bit more for 'extra bandwith' but probably best to start small and then go from there.

To design your pages you could use a ISP (people who provide your webspace and domain name) which offers a site wizard service - very simple process to then put your info _ but you have less control.

If you fancy having a go yourself (and you'll learn quickly, I promise!) then download NVU - a open source web design package, very much like Frontpage (a Microsoft product) but which is free.
NVU: http://www.nvu.com/index.php
My ISP: http://streamline.net/sw.php

Good luck!
