I've lately been having troubles using my DVD drive, whenever I inserting a disc of somesort into my DVD drive nothing happens. I know it's not dead, as it still shows some 'signs of living', plus it isn't even a year old yet. And it isn't diabled, as the option to disable it is still there when I right-hand click on it in device manager, yet it appears as being disabled.

That's about the easiest way i can some it up. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I'm using Windows XP Home btw.

could be a couple of things -

the drive could be dead, but if thats the case, the drive either wouldnt detect in Device Controller at all, or it would show up as fine

or

there may be a setting, software problem causing the drive to become disabled

easiest way to tell, is load your BIOS defaults and use a boot CD/DVD to see if the PC will read it... if it that works, theres either a setting problem with windows or there may be a virus... if it still doesnt work, go buy a new disc drive

My CD drive failed for a while, after I downloaded some screensavers, and dumped them later... Don't know what did it..? I installed a recent registry backup, then everything was OK...

Regedit>Registry>Import>Browse>That one>Boot>try a CD...
