Hi,

I had the implaon taken out nearly 2 weeks ago because it caused mood swings and very rapid weight gain (so much so that i have stretch marks everywhere!) and a massive increase in appetite.

I've noticed in the second week since having it taken out that my appeite has gone down - now i actually feel full after eating an average sized meal! Also, I feel a lot less bloated, and although i haven't weighed myself, I feel less sluggish.

If your doctor doesn't listen to you about weight gain/side effects etc, see another doctor and perservere until they take it out. I wish everyone the best - although implanon works for some, it certainly wasn't good for me! x

hello all you fellow implant users out there
just to say i really am grateful for this site its really good to know i am not the only one going through this.

I am 18 and since i was about 15 i had the injection i didnt want to take pills as i think its rubbish and loads of people i know have become pregnant with the pill (also i am soooo forgetful )
so it was the only other option at the time for me so i got the injection.
when i turned 17 i got the implant and at first it seemed AMAZING wow no periods? thats just fantastic or so i thought.

I put on about 1 and a half stone the 1st time and had bad skin, i was a constant moany teenager and got violent and cried all the time.
Women are made to have periods its what we are designed to do, its not a good thing in the long term and could end up being really serious to our health, so after 9 months and the doctor being very annoyed with me, i took it out. I was relieved of the weight loss i got agter taking it out and went back to what i believed to be normal....

however, a couple months later i decided i "missed" the implant it allowed sex whenever we wanted it great for the bf :P , it allowed no PERIODS!!!! and i thought i could get away with the weight gain again.
Went to see the doctor and they basically turned me away stating i was a stupid teenager who was wasting their resources and time.
I stood my ground and said i would rather have the impant then have an abortion (which i wouldnt have anyway)

ANYway...(sorry about the essay) they eventually put it in for me, and straight away it felt odd, the last implant i could clearly feel and see just under my skin, this time i could only feel the top and it made a bigger bruise then the 1st one. i just put up with it and it seemed fine, so i left it a couple of months.
Now its august 2008 i had the 2nd one put in january 2008 and i am waiting to have it taken out. when they put the second one in they warned me that i could only have the 2nd one put in if i had it in at least 1 year before taking it out, which at the time seemed only fair.

I now have been suffering with:
Really heavy Cramps
a kidney infection and bladder related symptoms
sudden sharp pains in my legs and thighs,
breathing difficulties,
swollen legs and ankles,
severe pain in my side (ovaries)
suspected ovary cysts
stupid irregualr periods which last 3/4 weeks at a time
headaches and spotty skin
pain during intercourse
weight gain
mood swings
itcy arm (placement of implant)

where do i end......................................hope this helps someone.

Hi there i am in the same boat i had mine removed on the 3rd Aug and came on my period on the 4th july exactly a month later.
I am trying for my first baby with my partner and also would like to know how long it takes to conceive and when? So will keep you updated and will share any advise i get.
Thanks x

hi, its great to hear from someone that is goin through the same thing, me and my partner ave decided to start trying now before i get my period, ive spoken to my doctor and she said they do prefer if you wait for your period for more accurrate dates but if you want to start trying before then its fine, they just date it from when you got your implant out. were you trying for a baby before you got your period? best of luck with it all, will keep you posted with any news or advice x

Hi thanks for the reply, its nice to know ive got someone to share this with. I started trying to conceive as soon as i has the implant removed. I brought an ovulation kit from boots and tested 2x a week and the tests were always negative so i assumed i wasnt ovulating, however i came on my period on the 4th Aug. So i must have ovulated at some point?
It is confusing trying to work out my cycle but i imagine i will ovulate around 14days from the 1st day of my period. Which should be the 17th Aug. So will do an ovulation test around then.
The nurse did say we could try straight away, but my doctor said to have 2 normal periods?
So just going to see if i come on again on the 4th sept, hopefully not! lol!
I will keep you posted x

i have just had my implant inserted 2 days ago the area is still sore and it feel strange to me i am really struggling to get used to it and after reading all the coments am a bit worried. i asumed that the implant would stop my periods and the nurse suggested it would be a good contraceptive to use as to not gain weight as i am already over wight and feeling very concious of it. how long does it take for you to get used to the feeling of it being there?? also how long does it hurt for ???? as it is the first time using it i am a bit worried and just want to put my mind a ese.

I had the implant put in june 2006 and im having it out in september 2008. Had absolutly no problems with it and had a very positve experence until recently when i had a 40 day period and was very fed up with it so i went to the doctors so i could arrange the removal !
It was a very good form of contraception and is great if you dont want to get pregnant. Im going to have to be carefull though as im not great at remembering to take the pill!

Good luck to all it really isnt that bad!

Hiya girls/guys
i have had 2 implants , so i am now in my 4th year.
i have always had dodgy periods, just like my mum, they were always heavy, every singal one.
since i had the implant in they have been so much better, i only get bad period pain every 2nd period , i cant say month as ma periods come and go when they want, some times they will last 2 days , the next one will last 4 weeks, but i cant blame it on the implant , i have always been messed up.

as for headaches cant say i hav those and eating loads cant say i do that. i do have an addiction to bacon rolls though.might blame the implant the next time ma mate at work laughs at me.

i hav an appointment with the family planning to get it out on the 8th of sep, but i am going to change it to feb< in north lanarkshire, u need to plan ahead as its hard to get an appointment.> as i have worked it out if i keep it a wee bittie longer before trying for a baby i will get full maternity pay for 9months, so makes sence.
does anyone know what the averge time is for falling pregnant after its removed.
THANKS GUYS, hope i didnt rabble too much, anyway got to go . starting ma baby fund doing overtime 2moro

OH YEH IT DOESNT HURT GETTING IT IN OR OUT. BUT WATCH THE PAPER STICHES , I WAS ALLERGIC TOO THEM AND NOW HAV A SCAR THE SIZE OF A 10P<IT BLISTERED>

Implant issues

Ive had my implanon only in for about two months and its already driving me crazy. I never seem to get a break from the constant bleeding and I have put on weight. I just had a baby and the weight seems to be adding on more and more onto the weight gained after having my child. I am getting it removed today! woohoo.. I am going to go straight on the pill, but I have had sex in the last three days, could I fall pregnant???

I had my implant put in in November 2005 so due to have it changed in a few months. I decided to use it as I'm too forgetful to rely on the pill. One thing I'm glad to see on here is that no one has become pregnant whilst implanted so at least it does it's job!

My doctor (family planning clinic) did warn me about side effects especially weight gain and irregular periods. My periods were quite heavy before but have lightened up and although irregular they don't last as long either, my current "pattern" sees gaps of 2/3 months which I like. I have gained weight but I've never been slim but over the past few months I have lost a stone and a half although it has been hard work. My already slightly spotty skin became worse but I've found stuff (Panoxyl) to deal with that. It was only when I read other posts that I realised that I have become more emotional.

I am now more nervous about having it removed and a second one put in. Hope it isn't worse!

I had mine put in a year ago and I've just had it removed - I've had it almost exactly 12 months. I didn't have many problems, but I did gain weight, despite exercising and eating reasonably healthily. I swear it changed my eating habits, so that I really craved sugary foods and found them almost impossible to resist. Well, we'll see I suppose! I've had other niggly health problems this year, like worsening asthma and general aches and pains. They're probably entirely unconnected but, for my own peace of mind, I want to try living with the implant for a while.

Now I'm having a coil put in on Wednesday. I'm a bit worried it's going to hurt a lot, but we'll see!

By the way, it didn't hurt to have the implant out - very quick and painless. I expected there would need to be a lot more poking around but really it was very straightforward and quick.

Oh, and for the person who was wondering how long it takes to get used to it when you have it put in: for me it was still a bit sore and bruised after a week, but it settled down after that. I started to forget about it after about two weeks. So it does take a little while.

hey, i had the implant put in 2 months ago, i have 2 kids and dont want anymore, the implant seemed the easiest thing to have.

its been in 2 months as i've said and when i touch it, it really hurts, is this normal?

When you really bash it hard or when you just brush against it? If a light touch is painful then no, that's definitely not normal. You should see your GP about it to make sure it's properly placed.

hi everybody, just a note to say that yes weight gain on implanon is common as you can retain fluid it is also common of the pill too. I first had the implant in after my first child as i fell pregnant on the pill i had no period for the first 18 months but then i had one that lasted 3weeks i went to my doctor who did a few tests which turned out to be bad it was failing my partner and i decided to have it out and we would try for a baby in a few months but i fell pregnant almost strait away. after my second child i had a new one put in and had no problems until about 18 months latter. i just had it out 2 weeks ago and am trying for my 3rd child. the implant worked ok for me for 18 months but it is because i am over 80kg which is the reacomended limit for it so if you are over that then you may just have problems. also to the ladys who are trying with no luck take the presure of your self and your man and stress could be the problem and it's no fun when it's not natural. please to write back as i have a good idea about this my family are all in the medical industry

Hello everyone.

I'm having my implant removed tomorrow. I found this site as I was researching what happens when they remove it so I thought I'd share my experience whilst on this thread.

Had the implant fitted in October last year. I wasn't on my period at the time as I was previously very irregular, so I'm not sure whether that messed things up for me or not, but when my period did finally arrive a month later it was all over the place. Once it started I basically ended up being on a light flow permanently, with odd days off here and there. The longest I managed to go with no bleeding was 8 days between November and June. And also (sorry to if I'm going into too much detail here) the blood was a rather strange colour! Nothing like it previously was anyway.
Add to this the acne, which was increasing in severity as the weeks went by, despite the fact I'd started using specialist skincare. My GP also prescribed a topical antibiotic to apply to my face however this made absolutely no impact (which didn't surprise me as surely the only solution to the problem would be to remove the source of the problem?).
I managed to put up with these problems until June this year, then I spoke to my GP who prescribed a 3 month course of the Marvelon contraceptive pill to 'force' my periods into a regular cycle.
So, it came as no surprise when my acne also cleared up, literally within days of going onto the pill!!! So I've decided I really can't face going back to spotty skin - I took my last pill last night and I'm getting the implant removed tomorrow, so hopefully my periods will naturally fall into a regular cycle from next month. I'm expecting that once out, my acne should also disappear, as it is not something that I'd previously suffered from.

Aside from the period problems and acne, I did not suffer from any of the problems that others on here seem to have had, however I have developed a massive appetite and crave takeaways, chocolate and macdonalds!!! Luckily I haven't put on any weight as I've just joined the police force and had to go running regularly prior to joining in order to pass the fitness tests they make you take - but I do wonder whether I would have piled on the pounds too if my situation had been different? :?
