Amy is 8 as is her best friend who is an Indian girl. Amy has her ears pierced (just one each side) and loves wearing some of her friends heavy and ornated earrings whenever possible.
The friend has now had her nostril pierced and wears a small ornate ring in it. Of course Amy now wants her nose pierced too. I don't object in principle (I can't since I wear a tiny ruby red stud in mine which was pierced when I was 14) and I think it would look good on her, but I am hesitating because of her young age. I can't find a good arguement against and it has obviuosly not caused her young friend any harm.
What do other Mum's think? |

have you thought that amy's friend could well have had her nose pierced as part of expressing her culture which could be the start of your argument on the side of why not, my daughter is 11 and has great plans for piercings and tattoos for when she is older but not just now,8 is a very young age for a child to have a piercing of any kind let alone a facial one, you have many arguable points like school ground accidents, and so on.you seem to have a very open, good relationship with your daughter, but she has many years ahead to experience these things which will be just as exciting in the years ahead, what ever your decission, good luck x |

I'm also a mum with a pierced nose and a daughter who from a very early age wanted her nose pierced too. I actually gave in when she was 7 and a half. She was very responsible and looked after it properly from day 1.
We had a bit of trouble with her school who said she couldn't wear it but we pointed out that there were two Indian girls at the school with nostril studs and surely if was a form of racism if they were allowed it and an English girl wasn't so they backed off.
She is now 15 and still wears her stud 24/7.
I can understand your hesitation, but I would say if she is up to caring for it and you have no other serious objections let her go for it! |

It has to be your decision as only you know your daughter.
I am English but my daughter's father is Indian. She went to India with him to visit his family when she was 6 and came back wearing a nostril ring. I was shocked at first but soon got used to it and had to admit that it was very attractive so much so that I had my own nose pierced. She is 18 now as still wears her nose ring. |

Hi Amy.
While a nose stud may be a very good idea in the long term, maybe in the first instance the double ear piercings would be suitable anyway, whether or not she does her nose just yet. |

Thanks everyone for your comments.
I've made up my mind and told Amy that when I collect her from school tomorrow I will be taking her to get her nose pierced. She is over the moon of course and not at all worried that it might hurt. She will be getting a needle piercing at a specialist piercing studio not a 'gun' piercing.
A couple of you suggested that she should get double lobes as well. She hasn't asked for these and I'm not going to suggest it unless she does.
I'll let you know how she gets on. |

Good for you. You have thought carefully about this and decided to get the pierceing done properley and not with on of those dreadful guns. Gun pierceing destroys the tissue and creates a ragged hole as it basically forces a blunt stud through the flesh, at speed. Much like being shot in fact.
A proper needle pierceing is far better and safer.
I'd suggest (from experience) that a small plain ring would be easier to care for and clean than a stud. And they don't catch on things like clothes as easily either, or fall out in bed!
Let us know how she gets on!
:O)

Well, for better or for worse (and I sincerely hope for better) it's done!
Amy is running round the house looking in every mirror she can find at the little gold ball ring in her nostril.
The piercer advised that a ring would be better for healing and we followed that advice. She can always change it for a stud when it has healed if she wants.
Amy was as good as gold. I was holding her hand while it was done ans she gave just a little gasp and squeezed my hand a bit as the needle went through her nostril and then gave a broad grin as the ring went in.
She can't wait to get to school tomorrow to show it off. I checked with the school that it would be accepted and they said that as Asian pupils were allowed to wear them they couldn't object to an English girl doing so although they would prefer that she didn't.
I had my little nose stud changed to a ring to keep her company. |

Amy is getting on fine with her nose ring and is being very good at cleaning it regularly.
I'm not flavour of the month with most of the other mothers however mainly because I think they fear demands from their own daughters to be similarly adorned. To those who hace commented I have just said that she is my daughter and I didn't object, if they don't want their daughters to follow suit that's up to them. |

Since another month or so has passed, how has Amy's nose piercing gone? Is is happy with it? have you had any problems? Have any other girls at school got their nose pierced? Are any other piercings planned?
Ciao, Rema |
