You'd probably find some advantage in doing a defrag on your machine and clearing out the temp files, but I;d say the main reason does sound like spywre, though.

It sounds like your Browser is corupt, and/or seriously damaged...

Try downloading SeaMonkey browser...

When was the last time you reloaded your PC's Operating System?..
Operating Systems wear out... I reload the OS every three months...

The same sort of thing happened to me the other week, although i had a error warning pop up to which was to do with my belkin router.
I also could access msn messenger, yahoo messenger, couldn't check emails, it wouldn't let me on the norton website, let alone scan.

I suggest you restore your computer, which is what i did, to a time before when your computer worked ok.

Restart your computer, as it's loading press F5, it'll bring up a screen in DOS format, select 'run in safe mode' it should be up the top of the screen

I'm assuming you have windowsXP, go into the admin username,

Start>all programs>accesories>system tools>system restore

And it'll ask you to restore the computer to a time when it was working properly, the days in bold are the days that you used the computer.

Once it's finished. The computer restarts itself, if it doesn't manually restart it. Go into whichever username you use.

My restore took about five minutes - quite a long time for a restore. So de frag you computer too,

Start>Accessories>Sytem tools>Disk Defragmenter

When that's done, scan for viruses again.

When my virus scan finished i had two trojans!!

Of which before i restored the computer, norton didn't pick up through the emergancy boot disk.
