This week the CEO of General Motors - Rick( 'Round 'em up and point 'em out!'..) Wagoneer announced that the biggest failure in the US auto' industry since the demise of the Ford Edsel, The Hummer 4WD utility vehicle, seemed to be on it's death bed, and its days were numbered...

Read all about it !!

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/04/business/04motors.html

Rick was overheard mumbling ".. we always knew it was a load_of_crap - even our own Army detests it !!! - but when you sink billions of dollars into a turkey like this, you just have to keep on keeping on..".

Last seen, GM executives were phoning their 'brokers to check on buying shares in Toyota, Land Rover, Daimler and Nissan...

a friend of mine owns one of the full size hummers. he took us all out in the woods for a camping trip, and the truck went through everything. being secluded in the forest with a nice place to swim, fish, camp, hunt with no one else in the near vicinity was really relaxing. I think we did more drinking and bs'ing around the fire than fishing and hunting though. we did swim a lot. going back to the everyday routine was kind of cruddy. I did like the hummer after that trip. if he can afford the 4-5$ a gallon diesel fuel, more power to him.

I'm ambivalent on this subject. Those who know me know I'm a public transit freak. I'm chairman of an important committee that helps run the Golden Gate Bridge…which is the bridge, maybe a couple of hundred busses and 7-10 ferries. I drive my vehicle perhaps 1,500 to 2,000 miles a year. I also have two collector’s automobiles in storage that haven’t been run in a decade. All this…just so you know where I'm coming from.

I think this whole anti-SUV thing is a pile of bullshit. The enemy is not the SUV, it’s the internal combustion engine. The SUV is the scapegoat. A bunch of hypocritical tree-huggers want to blame the SUV, so they can continue to drive their 2,000# Hondas and Subarus, hauling their silly single-ass around town. Ask yourself how much do you weigh. Now find out how much your vehicle weighs. Now ask yourself if you couldn’t walk your skinny ass to that store, or take public transportation and leave that 2,000# hunk of metal in the garage.

I don’t defend the SUV. I'm just smart enough to figure you out. You want to blame the SUV as a means of casting guilt off of your own shoulders. But I'm here…and I'm gonna get ya.

All of this horror over global warming and pollution would go away in a single day if we simply outlawed the internal combustion engine. Then we license all public transportation vehicles and vehicles necessary for emergency response and work-related matters—plumbers, builders, etc., but not commuters, shoppers or pleasure seekers.

I hear this S*** all the time about, ‘Oh, if I didn’t have my car I couldn’t get to my work at the time I go to work.’ Yes you could. You haven’t looked at a bus or train schedule for a decade, have you? We actually have a double, gas-guzzling system in every major…even minor…city in the world: public transportation…and your car. Cut out the latter, and the problem goes away. If you cared…truly cared, you’d stop scape-goating the SUV and accept the blame yourself.

Go, Cambridge !!! Laughing

A few points -

* Neither Lena nor I attacked SUVs, in general, in either of our posts above - only those Hummers and the kind of people who choose them over a lot more effective and efficient 4WDs/SUVs...

Speaking for myself:

* I wouldn't mind a 4WD myself, but it would be a more reliable mid-sized diesel-powered vehicle; plus I could probably use my beekeeping activities to meet your only if needed "work-related matters" points above...

* Down here you do often need a car or bike to get to work - as public transport is still crap when you get away from the cities..

* Personally, as well as a 4-cylinder Camry, I also have two mountain bikes, and I - for one - still walk to a lot of places; unlike those who are so glued to their cars they hop in them simply to drive around the corner.

There aren't "more effective" SUVs than the Humvee for the purposes of the U.S. military.

Food for thought, in this topic, to shake-up and wake-up this thread...

Hummer originally started up as an exclusive military machine, alternative to the jeep, only for the American military... Then "president Arnie" wanted one.. and big toy for a big man, for Mr. Atlas.. and eventually he was given permission to own a civilian hummer... Now he has about three or four...

Then hummer built a small version, and it was a big hit.. but it is a gas-eater, and gas is pricey...

Hummer isn't going down.. they are merely pulling in their tents for war prep... Soon hummer will be dancing on GM's and Ford's heads, while they go under, because of gas prices... And the lovely thing about it all, is that it was the big car manufacturer's associated with Oil sales that stifled gas alternative engines.. they pulled their own plug.. just like how humanity has pulled its plug for money too.. same as the street bum, who used to have a family and home and income, but got so much into coke and booze, that he forgot he was a human.. and now prefers a damp cave, to a home and wife'n kids...
Governments should send crews out to solid mountain regions, and drill caves everywhere for city bums.. and in a few decades there'll be Neanderthals again... Every week airdrop them a cow and some chickens, and a couple boxes of veggies.. and give 'em flint & steel fire starter kits.. knives, bedding, drums, and good runners...
Hummer isn't going out.. they're just pulling-back on their "hummer civics" because sales are down in the public arena...

I bet hummer will come up with an electric hummer civic that will over sell all the major car makers... We'll have hummer SUV modifications called, hummer, slammer, chipper, gripper, whipper, and slipper... There might even be a mini hummer, two seater.. weighing-in at 500 to 700 pounds... Bye Bye GM and Ford, you mindless money-sucking greedy pigs!.. Look what you arsehole creeps did to the world! You chewed it up, and spit it out.. and now your are tasting your lovely Karmas.. HaH! You deserve it! Monkeys.. You're nerve! pushing new car prices to 40-grand in a 10-grand culture... Your day is done and gone.. Over, Pffst!.. and it was your crazy nipple biter Bush who did what pulled out your rugs... You can thank your Bush family for earth becoming this hell on earth... fuk humanity!.. there ain't anything left of it... We've devolved into our early components... You are all screwed... Earth is dead, and you humes are on your way Out... All you got now is to hummer yourself a happy little dodah tune, and pretend everything is still OK in your crazy brainless shrinking heads...

Any bets, that when GM and Ford start crumbling, that we'll hear in the News about a couple hundred suicides..? It's gonna be the mother of all stock market crashes when money dies...

Put that on your plate and pick the meat out of it...

Were you aware of the severe damage your one little hummer-trip did to the forest..? Can you imagine if a million hummers trampled a forest in a month, or a year..? All that would be left would be rotting vegetation and mud... It would look like a farmer's new field being stripped to the dirt, for planting corn for gas and money...

When us hikers/cavers/divers go out into the natural arena, we are extremely careful to not step on valuable plants and fungus's, and animals homes, and such... We don't cause the forest Any damage... We leave it in Better condition than when we found it in.. But for every one of us who cares for the forests, there are a hundred thousand of you who carelessly damage and wreck it... We just can't keep up to the damage you do to nature...

I recall on one hike through a forest, I came upon a spot where hunters had target-practiced on ten cases of beer and wine bottles, and three cases of hard booze bottles for a thousand square foot area.. there was a hundred pounds of wickedly sharp broken glass everywhere.. it took me three and a half hours to cleanup their careless mess, using bare hands, and didn't get even one cut... Plus they had shot down thirty little trees in the area.. and all their food wrappers and excrements covered bits of ground for a hundred meters around their huge land scared fire pits areas... That sharp glass could have cut critter's feet and ankles... Critters don't have hospitals and doctors, nor even bandaids... All they've got in the medical department are their tongues, air, water, time, and hope...

Be nice to nature, or one day she will just eat you up, and turn you into poop... All of you.. Your body, and mind, and spirit.. but not your soul, cuz you don't have a soul.. there is no such thing as "souls"... That's just part of the great heavenly fagot's money faith-scam...

Every year our precious forests and jungles look deader than they did the previous year... Every week they are deader... One day they'll all just be dead, rotted, and gone, forever... Earth will be just a huge dead mud-ball floating in Space around a dying star...

A single hummer-trip into a forest probably totally fully Destroys about .001% of that forest... It's tires rips out and plows grasses and young trees, and tosses large rocks around like they were pebbles... It leaves huge plowed-ruts in the pristine life-giving forest floor... It goes along with "humanity destroying its home world for fun and money, with money and insanity... We must take care of the planet's dirt and waters.. That's what makes our food... The planet is what gives us life... It would be a good plan to help keep it alive.. for your kids, and their kids..
If you don't care about the planet, your kids won't care about the planet, their kids won't care for the planet, and one day there won't be enough life on the planet to care anything for... It's going that way right now... Each generation leaves its damages to the planet, added to that of the last generation... It's cumulative.. it doesn't just go away in time, it Rots... Proof: Go for a long slow walk to where you used to play in a forest when you were a kid, and take a good look around at how much of it is now destroyed... It's probably so bad that you wouldn't even want to pee there...

..Oh just cover your eyes, and hummer yourself a happy little tune, and everything will be all OK tomorrow... God will fix it for just 666-million well spoken prayers... So, how many good honest prayers have you added to the cure..? "God is good, god is great, he'll fix your mess before it's too late.. Ahhhmennn"... Halelooyah! GloryBe! and Praise Jesus!..

it probably won't make much of a difference, the hummer went along some rough snowmobile two tracks. it wasn't a road, but it wasn't pristine forest either. the honda accord wouldn't get there, and the site was gorgeous. So the six of us car pooled into the forest in the object of the worlds demise, the hummer. We didn't burn down the forest; or leave litter around. we camped as responsibly and conscintiuosly as we knew. I'll take my chances with the Almighty for my actions, thank you.

The U.S. military use armored Humvees in Iraq.

Land Rovers and Toyota Landcruisers cannot carry as many troops or as much equipment and are not as stable or as durable as Hummers.

Yeah!.. that's how it is by most... "Do what the hell you feel like to the planet, and god will punish you after you die, if he must, if he can, if he is..." You christians don't have any fear for your "god's wrath", because deep inside you know gods don't exist.. You know that the "existence of a god" is absolutely ridiculous, but you cling to it because you can't see anything else... You christians can murder, destroy, and terrorize, all you want.. then you just ask a fictitious "god" for forgiveness, and he gives his blessings to you, and every thing is cool for you...

I read your camping trip account, it sounds reasonable, but I sure ain't your judge... For most such trips into the wild, I bet those innocent jaunts mess-up a lot of land and plants, and I bet most little christian darlings vacate their camps all disorderly and littered.. with mounds of excrements all over the place, and bits of toilet tissue everywhere, for the critters to stumble upon and smell, all over their living rooms... I wonders if the critters wonder if we shidt on the floors in our homes, given that we are so uncivilized in their home...
I bet bet you bunch left a huge bit of scorched land where your fire pit was.. and maybe beer-cans tossed into the trees and bushes.. and cigarette butts just about everywhere...

Hummers, forests, and most people, just don't mix... Look what snowmobiles, atv's, and Hummers did to that forest.. and it sure isn't growing any better...

Ah.. But when the going gets tough and the tough get going...

The Landies can dance circles around the Hummers - at twice the speed and manoeuvrability with half the fuel consumption...

.. And the Humvees would run behind a tree and cry, if they could !!!
