| Well, my son is only 11 weeks old, but when the time comes and hes being really naughtly and won't behave, i will be administering discipline with a little smack here and there!! I only ever had two big smacks in my childhood, both given for bad behaviour, both remembered well and the lesson learnt!! |

I would never hit him hard enough to leave marks...a slight slap i said!! And only then if he is really naughty! I agree there are many alternative methods to hitting, but if none of them have an affect and he is out of control, my child, my choice!
Again i think its good the guide lines are there for the protection of abused children, but i can guarantee my children will not be abused by myself or my partner and its poeple like us that are often wrongly accused. |

Of course its your choice - no-one said it wasnt.
We are just giving opinions, of which mine is that hitting a child is abusive. If you are telling them they cant and shouldnt hit others but then hit them yourself, its a) violence anyway and B) confusing.
I hope that if your child comes home from school having hit a kid for calling him/her names that you'll tell them this is ok? It's what you've taught them afterall - someone behaves badly and angers you - hit them to teach a lesson. |

Talk about cultural differences! In most asian countries, it is considered the norm to spank your kids (and I *don't* mean a light slap). They would hit their hands with rulers, or smack their bums with a stick, or maybe a slap on the face. You can do that in public and people would only give you a stare or two and then walk away.
Most of the reasons related to spanking are: Getting low marks or embarassing the parents in public (maybe throwing a fit in the market or something)
Parents were considered authority figures, and it is considered rude if you treat your parents like your best friend.
My sister and brother were spanked as kids too, (my brother was really lazy so he got spanked a lot more). It didn't leave scars, but they usually leave marks for a few days.
And get this, most of the asian kids do not see anything wrong with spanking. My western teacher asked one of the kids 'don't you feel it's wrong that your parents hit you?'
To which he replied: 'oh no, we understand that they do this because they love us.'
Not saying that I agree with it, just giving a little cultural lesson here. |

And in some asian countries there is still capital punishment ( carried out in barbaric fashion ) and a complete lack of human rights......not saying its wrong lol, just thinking that quite often its asians and people in the far east that bleat about human rights when they come to a westernised culture.............. |

Some kids can become very defiant.
So raising your hand to "correct" them and assert who the boss is, is OK IMO!
That's what seperates Abuse from Corrections.... abuse is a regular occurance! Corrctions are not! |

I think thats a fir point Guest........Often a raised voice spoken in a firm assertive manner is enough.....And yeah the raised hand and the threat of a smack is enough to get the desired result.
I do have a lot of sucess though with simple grounding and removal of priviliges.......Do you know just how many car washes and pots washed you can get done by teenager in exchange for one hours MSN? |

+1
There's a difference between abusing a child and beating him/her to a pulp and showing tough love. Due to the lack of respect for parents and authority in children these days I feel that a lot of children need a good spanking. |
