Residents have spotted two of the birds around the city, with videos of the animals and their headpieces going viral and sparking a search for more.

It is yet to be discovered how the pigeons got the hats, although an animal welfare campaigner suggested the tiny accessories had sadly been glued to the animals.

Mariah Hillman, co-founder of pigeon rescue group Lofty Hopes, said: ''When we saw them, you could see some loose feathers in the glue around the hat. It's definitely a concern.''

The pigeons were first spotted by Bobby Lee, who posted a 12-second video of the bizarre sight which soon went viral.

He said: ''It got a lot of attention fast. The day after, I had a lot of news people texting me and people trying to buy my video.''

He also noted that the Wrangle National Finals Rodeo was in town and suggested they may be connected to the incident.

However, the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, which organises the event, denied having anything to do with the pigeons.
